SOUTH SHORE YOUNG MENS CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION is Hiring an Assistant Director - Day Camp Near Norwell, MA

The South Shore YMCA Day Camps are a place where campers aged 3-15 come to enjoy a wide range of summer adventures.

Camp is a unique place where we have the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of many youth. Along with the fun that camp provides comes great responsibility, long hot days with many different challenges. In addition to practical experience and training, you must have a strong desire to work with youth. SSYMCA Directors should be a positive role model for youth and a compassionate leader amongst campers and staff at all times.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR Applicants must be at least 20 years old. All leadership staff are actively involved in the overall planning and implementation of the camp program. They work closely with the Lead and Jr. Counselors and support them in their day-to-day jobs. Leadership staff are responsible for supervising and evaluating camp staff as well as supporting camper and parent concerns. Applicants should have prior camping and supervisory experience. During the months prior to the start of camp, the Assistant Director is responsible for attending and being actively engaged in regular meetings and planning sessions with the Director of Nature Adventures Camp and Camp Leadership of the South Shore YMCA. The Assistant Director is also responsible to assist with hiring of staff and monitoring of emails and voicemails along with the Camp Director. The Assistant Director would begin part-time immediately upon being hired, and full time once Camp begins.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Camp Director in planning and implementing the entire camp program; Inclusive of developing program goals.
  • Assist in maintaining the camp program, staffing and facilities according to state and local guidelines including but not limited to the Department of Public Health.
  • Work with Camp Director to supervise camp staff and play an active role in planning and execution of camp staff training.
  • Assist in evaluations for camp leadership staff
  • Assist in disciplinary actions
  • Assist the Camp Director in ensuring weekly staffing ratios are appropriately met
  • Help monitor staff days off, weekly enrollment, assignments of staff groupings
  • Assist the Camp Director in handling parent issues and maintaining a good working relationship with SSYMCA staff.
  • Assist the Camp Director and camp staff with discipline and behavior related issues
  • Assist in the on-site maintenance of accurate camper records, weekly rosters and camper attendance.
  • Assist in active communication with parents that may include dismissal from camp or behavioral related incident reporting.
  • Assist Camp Director in facilitating camp supply orders and ensuring all equipment is safe for camper use.
  • Adhere to all South Shore YMCA day camp policies and rules. Understand and abide by all policies and procedures outlined in the South Shore YMCA Employee Handbook.
  • Represent the South Shore YMCA in a positive and professional manner.
  • Any additional tasks deemed necessary and assigned by the Camp Director and/or Executive Director.
PROGRAM MANAGEMENT

Assist in planning and execution of programs to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. Responsible for assisting in the compliance in all related areas including the Department of Early Education & Care (EEC) licensing procedures and regulations, assist in working towards increased Quality Rating Improvement System (QRIS) levels as determined by SACC goals and promoting YUSA Healthy Eating Physical Activity (HEPA) standards. Provide reasonable accommodation to allow children with disabilities to participate in activities whenever possible and to meet each child’s individual needs according to EEC and ADA.

STAFF ENGAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

Assist in supervision of program participants in accordance with the organization's policies, EEC regulations, applicable laws and QRIS Standards. Monitor and communicate with Camp Directors, all staff related EEC, QRIS, and South Shore YMCA requirements.

MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

Builds relationships with and among families and members, assists in responding to inquiries and solves problems. Creates a supportive community environment,assists in recruiting and engaging new families and connects families to the YMCA’s cause.

FACILITY MANAGEMENT

Works with the Camp Directors and other Camp Staff members to ensure that program facilities and equipment for children are safe, clean, adequately equipped, well maintained, and attractive.

VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT

Responsible for assisting to engage and work with volunteers.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT & SUPPORT

Assists in YMCA fundraising activities/events, and engages in collaborative relationships with community organizations in order to strengthen support and build community.

  • Job Requirements Responsibilities:
  • Support Director in planning.
  • Plan and lead training activities prior to camp.
  • Attend camp meetings and pre-season training as required.
  • Support Camp Staff as needed on a daily basis.
  • Facilitating nature and science-based Garden Visits.
  • Ensuring camp curriculum is submitted prior to each week and gather supplies staff may need.
  • Adhere to basic safety principles as outlined in pre-season training.
  • Provide parents with clear communication about their children’s activities.
  • Participation in weekly leadership meetings; be an active member in team.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with school age children is preferred
  • The ability to develop positive, effective working relationships with staff, children & families, volunteers, school administrators, members, community leaders and other agencies are critical to this position.
  • Effective management skills, the ability to implement methods to address and follow up with family needs/concerns in a positive and professional way reflecting an attitude that values diversity.
