SOUTH LAKE SCHOOLS

Director of Facilities and Operations

Job Goal: To perform complex administrative duties and responsibilities requiring extensive knowledge of the school district rules, regulations, practices, and procedures. To handle both internal and external confidential documents and information as directed by the Superintendent, and to exercise independent judgment and initiative in the performance of the job duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma required
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred or equivalent training, experience and certification
  • Evidence of computer efficiency; proficient in Word, Excel, AS400
  • Basic understanding of the educational process and all applicable State and Federal laws and regulations
  • Proven ability to effectively manage personnel and resources and to communicate effectively with staff, parents, teachers, and the general public
  • Strong human relations skills; demonstrated organization skills; and excellent public relations skills to include courtesy, tact, and strong communication/language skills

Reports to: Superintendent or designee

Performance Responsibilities:

Primary Function: To use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to implement facility/grounds plans that promote well maintained facilities/grounds and their proactive maintenance.

Training and Experience: Training and knowledge in the maintenance of wood, rubberized, porcelain, VCT tile, and carpeted flooring; a sound knowledge of building construction, the maintenance and operation of buildings and grounds; an understanding of the specific purposes of school facilities maintenance and operation, and of the basic purposes of education in general; the ability to work well with people, to organize effectively and to plan wisely; and the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Demonstrated Technical Skills: Planning and organizational skills, knowledge in the maintenance of boilers and air conditioning systems, temperature controls of boilers and air conditioning systems; and possess computer literacy skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as schematics, blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Human Relations Skills: Ability to communicate effectively and relate positively with students, parents, custodial staff, and members of the community. Requires strong, proven abilities in leadership, organization, and customer service.

Assigned Responsibilities:

  • Assume responsibility for the overall direction and management of school facilities maintenance and operation, grounds, and planning for new technologies and future growth under the general direction of the Superintendent, and in accordance with Board objectives and policies
  • Develop job descriptions and work schedules for all custodial/maintenance personnel
  • Assign and direct all custodial and maintenance personnel, and participate in the selection of new maintenance personnel
  • Develop and provide orientation/initial training of new employees and the continuous training for all custodial and maintenance personnel
  • Develop effective and efficient systems for all custodial and maintenance services, preventative maintenance services, and work orders
  • Complete and document regularly a detailed inventory of physical plant
  • Maintain the technical library consisting of plans, specifications, shop drawings, manufacturer’s literature, etc., on all buildings and equipment therein
  • Complete the development of maintenance standards and guides for each building
  • Provide supervision and leadership for evening employees
  • Develop safety work rules for employees and conduct a continuous safety program
  • Monitor the District safety/crisis plan, regularly participate in County safety meetings, and make recommendations to the Superintendent regarding school safety
  • Select, recommend for purchase, and evaluate products relating to operation and maintenance supplies, equipment, and tools
  • Coordinate appropriate bidding and purchase of supplies, equipment, and tools
  • Supervise, inspect, and evaluate the work of contractors and certify satisfactory completion for payment
  • Account for inventory and distribution systems for supplies, equipment, and tools
  • Assist in the planning for new buildings and additions, remodeling, and renovations
  • Develop schedules for periodic inspection, preventive maintenance, and service of buildings and equipment
  • Develop long-range plans for the improvement of buildings and grounds
  • Assist in the development of a facilities budget
  • Work with building administrators to ensure that proper custodial and maintenance services are provided for all activities
  • Represent the Superintendent in working with the architect on construction projects
  • Evaluate all building services personnel
  • Supervise all services that are contracted for ground maintenance including snow removal
  • Manage the bidding process for ground maintenance and snow removal
  • Check road conditions and advise the Superintendent on road hazards and inclement weather which may affect the operation of school
  • Coordinate the repair and upkeep of all district equipment
  • Enforce all state and national regulations and Board of Education policies
  • Cultivate great customer service and problem solving practices for employees when dealing with concerns from District stakeholders
  • Attend appropriate district and county committee and staff meetings
  • Such alternatives to the above as the Superintendent or designee may find appropriate
  • The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the district.
  • Employee shall properly implement Board Policy 3122, Policy 4122, and Policy 2260 on non-discrimination and shall comply with Federal and State laws and regulations, particularly Part 1 104 of Section 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (34 CFR) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Terms of Employment: Twelve Month Contract – 235 workdays

Base Salary Range: $76,575 – $82,463

ADA Requirements: Office environment; extensive computer work; filing, telephone work; interactive with public, staff members; multi-tasking assignment.
