As the Range Coordinator for the South Dakota Shooting Sport Complex, you'll have a pivotal role in managing and maintaining this premier firearms range facility. With 400 acres of land dedicated to the complex, there's ample space to cater to a wide range of shooting enthusiasts, from hunters to recreational shooters to law enforcement personnel.

The complex is organized into two separate areas, north and south, and offers versatility and options for shooters of all levels. Whether individuals are looking for basic target practice or specialized training spaces for law enforcement, the complex aims to provide top-notch facilities.

Your role will involve overseeing the day-to-day operations of the complex, ensuring that the facilities are well-maintained, safe, and conducive to a positive shooting experience for all visitors. With the complex located within minutes of several surrounding communities, you'll likely have a steady flow of visitors seeking to take advantage of the world-class shooting opportunities it offers.

Additionally, as word spreads about the complex within the shooting sport industry, hosting shooting events will become an integral part of your responsibilities. This could involve coordinating tournaments, competitions, training workshops, and other events to attract participants and showcase the complex's capabilities.

Licenses and Certifications:

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Communication:

Daily direction and oversight of staff as well as routine contact with the public and programming opportunities are all important tasks for this position. Ability to communicate through differences, obstacles, and have tough conversations with staff, the public, and community members is a must.

Teamwork:

Build positive relationships with your direct reports, volunteers, and the surrounding communities. Must possess the ability to interact and cooperate with team members to achieve desired objectives and goals. Creating a culture of “we” versus “I” is very important.

Leadership:

Inspire team members to attain the highest level of effort and quality in their daily duties as well foster a culture that leads by example and listens to its team members ideas.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • public administration as it relates to fiscal planning and allocation;
  • recruiting both volunteers and permanent staff;
  • present information on the range to groups including commissions, GFP staff, and partners;
  • principles of effective human relations and working for the public;
  • computer skills, such as power point, GFP license program, and outlook;
  • principles and practices in educational programming;
  • curriculum development and classroom teaching as it relates to the range as well as public information (R3);
  • Pittman-Robertson Act of 1937; North American Model of Wildlife Management;
  • develop innovative resource materials;
  • assign, direct, and monitor the work of permanent, seasonal, and volunteer employees;
  • develop and coordinate special events that promote the shooting sports industry;
  • ensure the facilities are clean, organized, and meet the GFP standards for a publicly open range;
  • establish effective working relationships with coworkers, consultants, and other agencies;
  • effectively use all types of media;
  • work with contractors on various repairs or facility improvements.
