The South Dakota Department of Transportation Aberdeen Area Office is looking for an eager and capable individual to support our mission to provide “Better Lives through Better Transportation.” By joining our team, you will become part of that larger purpose to maintain and build our state’s transportation system for all South Dakotans and those who travel through our state.
The Aberdeen Area oversees over 800 miles of roads and bridges, including 90 miles of Expressway. We have work in a variety of capacities from asphalt paving, concrete paving, bridge construction, and much more.
We have opportunities for you to work independently and in a team setting. We provide training for the work you will do. The Aberdeen Area provides a great team environment, mentoring, and overall purpose with people that care. Work assignments allow you to work in a variety of environments from the office to the great outdoors. As a team member, you will be given safety shirts, a jacket, and other related safety items. Also, you will be provided a state vehicle for use on the job.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
This position has a typical 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, mid-November through March. Longer hours will generally occur during construction season to be compliant with Federal Highway requirements. This may include some weekend hours from April through mid-November.
Work assignments are frequently performed outside in all weather conditions and around highway traffic.

The total compensation of Hourly Wage State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Journey Transportation Technician is approximately $62,913.00 annually.
Licenses and Certifications:
Classes and training for certification and recertification requirements are provided through the Department of Transportation. Certification in one or more materials testing areas and/or one or more inspection areas is required within the first year of employment. Further certification areas will be determined by the supervisor according to job responsibility and needs. Required certifications must be maintained for continued employment.
A valid driver's license is required.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A positive attitude that is willing to learn and be self-motivated. While a degree is not required for this entry level position, having a technical degree in civil engineering technology, engineering/architectural drafting, and/or experience in transportation related construction or surveying is preferred, but not required.
