SCOPE
South Bronx United Inc. (SBU) is a sports-based youth development organization that uses soccer as a tool for social change aiming to help youth build character, teamwork, and leadership so they can succeed in high school, college, careers, their community and beyond. SBU serves more than 1,600 young people annually through programming on the field and in the classroom, working to unite a diverse group of students, families, and the South Bronx community toward positive goals. South Bronx United seeks a passionate and dynamic social worker or mental health counselor to join our team as the full-time Social Work Program Manager. This person will serve as a key staff member of the SBU Academy, a comprehensive and longitudinal program serving 190 youth annually, grades 6-12. The Academy program is guided by SBU’s Student-Athlete Pathway, a cohesive program design that outlines scaffolded, target outcomes for each grade level in social emotional learning, academic skills, high school and college preparation, and competitive soccer. The Social Work Program Manager works collaboratively with SBU’s Immigration Services Program Manager (SW), program staff, coach-mentors, and volunteers to achieve the organization’s mission and impact youth outcomes. The core responsibilities include individual and group SEL interventions, family support and referrals, program design for SEL infusion across academics and soccer, and managing partnerships and initiatives that contribute to a positive student experience and promote social emotional learning.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Program manager’s responsibilities include:
1. Enhance student-athlete well-being and social-emotional learning and growth
Manage individual youth cases, including meetings, referrals, and coordination with school, family, and other providers.
Conduct annual social emotional learning check ins with all Academy youth, use data to plan follow up interventions needed.
Develop, facilitate, and track social, emotional, and behavioral interventions.
Offer individual and group counseling for select youth.
Adapt and facilitate SEL skills groups and workshops to promote character development and life skills.
Supporting leadership programs and activities.
2. Oversee SEL infusion across all SBU Academy programming
Manage the measurement and evaluation of SEL quantitative and qualitative data from surveys, attendance, behavior, and performance trends.
Develop strategies to increase and maintain students’ engagement in academic programs through authentic engagement, promoting peer bonds, and sharing power effective practices.
Instituting program-wide practices for challenging growth and managing goals for student-athletes.
Collaborate with and supervise program volunteers, mentors, and junior staff in delivering youth programming and serving as youth mentors.
Oversee the professional development of coach-mentors and staff in regards to positive youth development practices.
Coach peers on appropriate interventions based upon the positive youth development framework.
Meet biweekly with Coach-Mentors to provide support and case conferencing relating to the needs of student-athletes on their teams.
Plan staff and coach-mentor trainings to address skill gaps in implementing positive youth development practices.
3. Manage family engagement, relationships and support for SBU Academy
Partner with external organizations and refer youth for outside services.
Coordinate referrals for youth and families to outside agencies (including education, mental health, legal services, physical health).
Build partnerships with community organizations that serve as youth resources.
Manage relationships and facilitate communication with youth’s schools, teachers, and counselors in order to collect student data and communicate regarding youth attendance or other concerns.
Collaborate with immigration services to help address the complex needs of families, including the organization of Know Your Rights presentations.
Conduct orientations to the program for all new families, including screening for immigration and social work services.
Communicate with guardians and families on issues and activities concerning their children, including the coordination of family education and guardian meetings.
4. Manage initiatives and partnerships to enhance student-athlete experience and promote their social emotional learning
Build and maintain relationships with outside organizations that provide resources or opportunities that align with organizational values and SEL priorities.
Coordinate special events with community partners for students and families.
Supervise a team of social work interns in order to increase the capacity of the social work program at SBU.
Organize family-oriented and community-based programs and events as needed (immigration seminar, health/wellness day, clothing/equipment drives).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Candidates should ideally meet the following requirements:
Commitment or connection to the SBU mission and/or South Bronx community
LMHC or MSW, with at least two years of experience in youth development
Strong individual and group counseling facilitation skills
Experience building relationships and supporting youth and families in dynamic settings
Effective in multi-cultural and cross-cultural settings,,able to engage authentically with the diverse SBU community and implement culturally-sustaining practices
Self-awareness and recognition of ways that race and other identities intersect in the work, especially for communities with whom we partner
Strategic prioritization to manage macro, annual planning and daily responsibilities
Strong team and communication skills
Strong interpersonal, mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple responsibilities and willingness to adapt to changing community and program needs
Flexible and adaptable to work in a variety of settings
Highly organized, efficient, and detail-oriented
Spanish proficiency strongly preferred. French proficiency a plus.
TIME
Full-time hours aligned with afterschool and evening programming with occasional weekend events
Monday/Wednesday, 11:30am - 7:30pm, Tuesday/Thursday/Friday, 10:00am - 6:00pm
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The starting annual salary range for this position is $50,000-60,000, commensurate with skills and experience.
