SUMMARY: The Somerville YMCA is looking for an enthusiastic and responsible Swim Instructors to join our team as members of our busy aquatics department. Team members play an integral role in creating a safe and welcoming atmosphere for swimmers of all ages and skill levels, maintaining a positive and friendly environment for all. Weekday and weekend shifts available.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Up to date understanding of swim strokes and their mechanics
  • Use objective decision making and maintain a calm disposition during all high pressure interactions or situations
  • Maintain accurate records as required by the Somerville YMCA and/or state and local health department regulations.
  • Have a developed understanding of different levels of swimming and various teaching styles
  • Enforce all aquatic center rules while maintaining a professional image and manner consistent with the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Notify Aquatic Leadership or other Y Manager on Duty in the event of incident or safety concern.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with all YMCA members, program participants, volunteers and team members across all departments. Ensure smooth communication and effective operations across all levels of the organization.
  • Be able to lead a swim lesson with or without an aide to a variety of ages and skills sets
  • Maintain a safe and enjoyable lesson that aims to progress participants swimming abilities
  • Kept up to date on the stoke mechanics and developments and updates on how to instruct and preform each stroke and swimming development skill

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Lifeguard Certification preferred.
  • WSI or equivalent certificate preferred.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to and over 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • Ability to stay in water for prolonged periods of time.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $17.00 - $18.50 per hour
