Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Teacher

Location : Mesa, AZ

Description : We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Teacher to join our dynamic team in Mesa, AZ.

As a DHH Teacher, you will provide specialized instruction and support to students with hearing impairments, ensuring access to a quality education and fostering their academic, social, and emotional development.

Responsibilities :

  • Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with hearing impairments, tailored to their unique learning needs and abilities.
  • Provide direct instruction in language development, literacy, communication skills, and academic subjects using a variety of teaching strategies and communication methods, including American Sign Language (ASL), auditory-verbal techniques, and assistive technology.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, support staff, and parents to integrate students with hearing impairments into inclusive classroom settings and support their participation in extracurricular activities and school events.
  • Support students in developing self-advocacy skills, independence, and social-emotional competence, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment that celebrates diversity and promotes mutual respect and understanding.
  • Provide training and support to school staff, including teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators, on effective strategies for supporting students with hearing impairments in the classroom and school community.
  • Collaborate with related service providers, such as speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and occupational therapists, to address students' communication, sensory, and academic needs.
  • Stay informed about current research, best practices, and assistive technologies related to deaf education and hearing impairment, participating in professional development activities and networking opportunities to enhance your knowledge and skills.

Educational Requirements :

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Deaf Education, Special Education with a specialization in Deaf Education, or a related field required.

Certifications :

  • Valid Arizona teaching license with a Special Education endorsement or Deaf Education endorsement required.
  • Certification as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (TODHH) from the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) required.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and knowledge of other communication modalities used by individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Experience working with students with cochlear implants, hearing aids, and other assistive listening devices.
  • Knowledge of educational assessments and accommodations for students with hearing impairments, including modifications to curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, and members of the school community.
  • Commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in education and advocating for the rights and needs of students with disabilities.
