Medical Biller Job Description

We are seeking a qualified and dedicated medical biller/coder to join our administrative office. In this position, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks requiring data analysis, in-depth evaluation, and sound judgment. As our medical biller/coder, your daily duties will include maintaining billing software, appealing denied claims, and recording late payments.

To succeed in this role, you must possess in-depth knowledge of billing software and medical insurance policies. The ideal candidate must also be able to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, as communicating with clients and various insurance agents will form a large part of the job.

Outcomes desired:

Ensure claims get submitted in a timely manner, ensure claims get processed in a timely manner, work on returned claims to quickly re-process them, keep the accounts receivable >90 days at <15% of the total.

Guidelines of what tasks need to be done:

  • Monitor and post EOB/ERA’s received from insurance companies
  • Check eligibility and benefits verifications for rejected or denied claims
  • Review patient bills for accuracy and completeness, and obtaining any missing information
  • Preparing, reviewing and transmitting claims using billing software
  • Following up on unpaid claims within standard billing cycle timeframe
  • Report alerts on patient charts when delinquent accounts are 90 days
  • Calling insurance companies regarding any discrepancy in payments if necessary
  • Researching and appealing denied claims
  • Updating spreadsheets for no-show and running collection reports

Basic requirements:

  • A minimum of one to three years of experience in a medical office setting
  • Knowledge of business and accounting processes usually obtained from an associate’s degree
  • Knowledge of insurance guidelines including Medicare, Medicaid, and other commercial payer requirements
  • Competent use of computer systems (Google drive, excel)
  • Familiarity with CPT and ICD-10 coding
  • Effective communication abilities for phone contacts with insurance payers to resolve issues
  • Ability to work well in a team environment. Being able to triage priorities, and handle conflict in a reasonable fashion

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $16.00 - $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 5 – 10 per week
