Job Summary
The Nurse Technician is a nursing student employed by a healthcare organization, who is currently enrolled in good standing in a nursing program approved by the commission and has not graduated or recently graduated in the past 30 days, or as defined by rule. The information described in this job description has been designed to indicate the general nature of the work performed. It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications required of employees assigned to this job.
Essential Functions
Maintain requirements to qualify for employment as a nursing technician. Follow scope of practice as defined in WAC’s and facility standards. Function only under the direct supervision of a registered nurse who agrees to act as supervisor and is immediately available to the nursing technician. Perform specific nursing functions based upon and limited to current nursing education and when they have demonstrated the ability and been verified to safely perform these functions by the nursing program in which the nurse technician is enrolled. Must obtain and maintain written documentation of the specific nursing functions that they can perform from the school. Practice six rights of medication administration: (Drug, Patient, Dose, Time, Route, and Documentation), and other safety measures associated with storage, administration, and handling of medication equipment and supplies. Evaluate the effects and note side effects of all medications, procedures and treatments administered and report to the RN supervisor as indicated. Notify the RN when any medication, procedure, or treatment that the nursing technician cannot perform is due. Nurse Technicians may not: Administer Chemotherapy, Administer Blood or Blood Products, Administer IV medications or scheduled drugs or carry out procedures on Central Lines, Perform assessments or care planning, Function independently, Delegate tasks. Keep RN Supervisor aware of changing patient needs that may require modification in the plan of care and or nursing orders. Document according to all established policies and procedures. Ensure that physician orders are carried out accurately and promptly. Ensure that patient rights and dignity are safeguarded in all aspects of patient care. Assist with prompt responses to call lights. Assist other team members to ensure: Plan of care is followed, Fluid and dietary needs of patients are met, Patients are correctly positioned, clean and well groomed. Provides and supports as needed, hands on care in areas of patient transfers, ADL’s, comfort, hygiene, and nutritional needs. Ensures that patients are ready to receive services in a timely manner e.g. appointments, medications, treatment, labs, procedures and therapies. Safeguards patient belongings, reporting patient and/or family concerns of unexplained loss. Ensures that all patient and employee safety policies are followed e.g. incident, accidents, injury, fire, disaster, us of and application of physical restraints. Practices excellent stewardship by utilizing supplies wisely and is conscious of costs to patients. Ability to understand and follow policies and procedures. Understanding and support of mission, vision, and values. Understanding of and ability to deal with confidential information with discretion. Reliable attendance for scheduled hours and the willingness to be flexible in covering additional hours, including weekends, holidays, and other times. Maintaining perspective and a sense of humor, responding positively to rapidly changing demands. Handling people and situations with understanding, diplomacy, and tact. Setting priorities and handling multiple tasks to deadline. Working cooperatively in a team environment. Problem solving and ability to handle unexpected and unpredictable circumstances. Ability to work in situations that involve frequent changes of tasks using different techniques, procedures, or degrees of attentiveness without loss of efficiency or composure. Must have competent documentation skills and ability to use medical devises as indicated in a safe manner for patient. Ability to work in situations that involve interpersonal relationships in a job setting beyond giving and receiving work instructions. Ability to work in situations that involve coping with circumstances dangerous to the worker and others. ADHERENCE TO SRH AND DEPARTMENTAL POLICIES: Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of all policies and procedures and ability to reference them from appropriate sources. Complies with SRH's infection control policies and procedures including Body Substance Isolation (BSI) and the Exposure Control Plan which reflects OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard to ensure a safe working environment for self and others. Ensures that SRH is operated in an efficient and cost effective manner by adhering to SRH and departmental attendance policies as documented on the Employee Attendance Record. Demonstrates adherence and support of SRH - Wide Service Standards and SRH/Department Safe Practices Standards.
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent. Current enrollment in good standing in Nursing Program, and completed first year of nursing school. Also approved by the nursing commission and has not yet graduated or recently graduated in the past 30 days, or as defined by rule.
Experience/Training
Prior experience as a nursing assistant or medical assistant desired.
License/Certifications
Nurse Technician is responsible for obtaining WA State Nurse Technician registration. Must be able to demonstrate that they submitted their application for the Nurse Technician registration prior to onboarding to remain in Nurse Technician program. May not perform any patient care/patient facing duties until Nurse Tech. registration is received. AHA (American Heart Association) Health Care Provider BLS required prior to start date.
Other Skills
Demonstrates ability and appropriate technical skills when administering treatments and procedures in accordance with physician's orders and policies and procedures. Demonstrates necessary skills and knowledge to provide care for patients according to SRH and unit specific policies and procedures. Demonstrates ability to handle emergency situations in a prompt, precise, and professional manner. Provides personal patient care to provide comfort and well-being to the patient, acknowledging physiological and psychological needs. Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills required.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to focus.Skagit Regional Health offers a comprehensive benefit package including medical, dental, vision, 457b/401a (retirement), long term disability, and paid time off to all employees holding an FTE of 20 or more hours per week. Eligible employees also receive sick time pay.
