Description

The primary function of this position is to develop and oversee the School of Medicine's program for continuing medical education/professional development. This position initiates and manages continuing medical education and professional development programs in Springfield and throughout central and southern Illinois. This position also directs and coordinates various special projects in the Office of Continuing Professional Development. It administers the daily activities of the office, supervises the preparation of course budgets and fiscal reports, supervises staff, and ensures the smooth conduct of office operations. The position interprets and implements Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) policies and ensures that the School of Medicine maintains accreditation.

Examples of Duties

Administration 75%

  • Oversee the development of policies and procedures governing the functions of the Office of Continuing Professional Development.
  • Oversee the coordination and development of major conferences and symposia as appropriate to the continuing medical education mission. This will be done in conjunction with the educators and leaders of various departments of the School of Medicine, as well as various stakeholders outside of SIU School of Medicine.
  • Oversee the registrar functions for all continuing medical education programs offered at or accredited by the School of Medicine. This includes developing and administering provisions for awarding and recording American Medical Association's AMA PRA Category 1 credit (continuing education credits for physicians) and applicable credits for other professions.
  • Oversee evaluation of all continuing medical education programs offered through the School of Medicine, to document effectiveness and contribute to planning of future programs.
  • Oversee development of appropriate budgets for the Office of Continuing Professional Development.
  • Monitor all functions of the Office of Continuing Professional Development to assure compliance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
  • Serve as liaison with key continuing medical education/professional development directors, administrators, and staff at regional hospitals, family practice satellite clinics, medical societies, and other related institutions/organizations. Collaborate closely and respond to educational needs identified by Human Resources and the Center for Human and Organizational Potential.
  • Work with faculty, hospital, and medical continuing medical education and professional development coordinators to develop, deliver, and evaluate continuing medical education programs. This includes:
    • Work with educational activity directors to develop program concepts and topics appropriate for continuing medical education and professional development activities, while striving for innovative learner engagement.
    • Recruit educators from the School of Medicine and, if required, from other institutions/organizations.
    • Oversee development of promotional materials and marketing with regional site coordinators and educational activity directors.
    • Identify target learners for programs and develop marketing strategies.
    • Supervise personnel who prepare course budget estimates and coordinate financial processes and transactions with educational activity directors.
    • Supervise personnel who coordinate logistical support with regional sites and educational activity directors, as needed.
    • Coordinate the compilation and analysis of course statistics, attendance, and evaluation data with conference planners.
    • Review past course summary evaluations with educational activity directors to discuss and implement suggestions and modifications for future courses.
    • Oversee the overall fiscal management of activities, including compliance with ACCME Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education.
  • Interpret fiscal policies regarding continuing medical education/ professional development programs to School of Medicine faculty and staff and to outside organizations.
  • Serve as liaison between the School of Medicine and regional stakeholders to advance the needs of learners.
  • Supervise staff of the Office of Continuing Professional Development relative to carrying out the above functions.
  • Encourage free and rigorous scientific discourse while facilitating evidence based medical topics that may appear sensitive or controversial with integrity and professionalism.
Research 5%
  • Assist in design and implementation of surveys and studies.
  • Research new types of continuing medical education formats and carry out the administrative aspects of developing these new programs.
  • Participate in scholarly production to contribute to the body of knowledge in continuing professional development.
Service 20%
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures for administration of continuing medical education/professional development programs for the School of Medicine.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing strategy to promote continuing education/professional development programs and expand the School of Medicine's presence in the region.
  • Serve on University and School of Medicine committees as appropriate and/or requested.
  • Serve in state and national continuing medical education organizations as appropriate for state and national service and professional development.
  • Demonstrates, by actions, commitment to the mission and the behavioral standards of SIU School of Medicine. Provides excellent service to both internal and external customers through collaboration and partnership; compassion and respect; integrity and accountability; diversity and inclusion; as well as continuous learning and improvement.
  • Represent a commitment to the needs of underrepresented and vulnerable populations through direct educational offerings, consistent integration of diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices in programming.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor's degree
  2. Three (3) years of experience in an academic institution or professional organization at the administrative level in an area of education

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master's Degree
  2. Experience in development and/or management of continuing professional education activities
  3. Experience in continuing education for healthcare professionals
