Position Title: Senior Director of Grantmaking
Background 
The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina is a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System. In response to God’s call and the spirit of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, the Foundation strategically uses resources to reduce poverty through action, advocacy and leadership. Since its inception in 1996, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina has distributed nearly $80 million to over 1,100 nonprofits working to reduce poverty in the lives of individuals and families in the Palmetto State.
Job Summary:
The Senior Director of Grantmaking leads the Foundation's grant programs, collaborating with the president and fellow foundation team members to execute a grantmaking strategy for the foundation that effectively addresses the Foundation's mission and core focus. The Senior Director of Grantmaking ensures that all grant related activities are delivered successfully to meet the common goals of grantee partners and the Foundation as a whole. The Foundation has two major grant deadlines each year with a high volume of inquiries and applicants. An average of 200 grants are awarded each year. The Senior Director of Grantmaking will fully embrace our grantmaking principles which are built on transparency, both internally and internally; trust, reciprocal and shared; humility, being mindful of proximity; and value alignment, rooted in the Foundation’s core values. This position is a member of a high performing team and requires a desire for ongoing learning as it relates to the technical and strategic components of our grantmaking, strong organizational and project management skills, high emotional intelligence, thoughtful attention to detail both written and orally, ability to balance multiple deadlines, and a demonstrated ability to create an exceptional experience for grantee partners.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Grantmaking strategy oversight and execution based on best practices, ongoing research, and applied learning
  • Collaborate on external grant/ grantee-partner related communication
  • Ensure consistent delivery of a high-quality brand experience through communications with applicants, grantees, and other members of the public as it relates to the Foundation’s grant programs.
  • Review all grant applications and lead grant decision making/ recommendations
  • Ensure Board and staff experience strategic engagement with grantee partnersServe as the staff point of contact of Grants Committee (responsible for meeting preparation, materials, communication with Committee and Chair); Prepare and present reports of Grantmaking work to the Grants Committee quarterly and shared responsibility of reporting to the Board of Trustees.
  • Oversight of all grants and grants-related internal processes: Ensure all timelines/workflow for all grants-related tasks are on-track/ complete
  • Conduct interim check-in meetings and manage relationships with a portfolio of Systems Level Change and Breaking the Cycle of Poverty grantee partners
  • Collaborate on feedback for declined applicants
  • Accountable for all grantee-centered projects including events, communication, and other activities as they arise.
  • Build and strengthen authentic, trusting relationships with grantee partners in which they feel supported by the Foundation by both the grant funding itself and assistance beyond the grant, thereby strengthening program delivery.
  • Provide oversight of planning and messaging for Foundation grantmaking-related forums, workshops, webinars and other convenings, to ensure coherent, consistent communication of grantmaking framework and infrastructure.
  • Prepare well-written and accurate grant recommendation summaries for the Grants Committee and the Executive Committee for two grant cycles each year.
  • Both respond to and actively seek out opportunities to share our grantmaking with external audiences: share the work of the foundation and lessons learned on panels and at speaking engagements
  • Collaborate with fellow funders in South Carolina who are mission aligned.
  • Travel within South Carolina is periodically required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree is required, and a Master’s degree in nonprofit management or a related field is preferred.
  • At least 4-6 years of experience in nonprofit, grantmaking, or related field
  • Experience managing staff is required.
  • Knowledge and experience of causes and consequences of poverty in South Carolina
  • Demonstrated high-level of critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Possess the ability to prepare for and deliver high quality and engaging public presentations about the Foundation and our grantmaking
  • Fluency in Foundant or similar grants management software
  • Highly skilled in Microsoft Excel and Power Point as well as Canva.
  • Knowledge and experience with practical application of nonprofit organizational best-practices (including but not limited to Certification in Nonprofit Management or other related field).
  • Detail-oriented problem solver with exceptional organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to model best practices in consultation and learning approaches
  • High emotional intelligence and track record of excellent customer service delivery
  • Possess the ability to establish relationships with community organizations; work with a team of people in an open, honest, positive, and mutually supportive manner; and be capable of representing the Foundation and its programs with a high level of enthusiasm, professionalism, integrity and commitment.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative, prioritize effectively, successfully manage multiple ongoing projects (sometimes under extreme deadlines) and consistently deliver a high-quality final product.
  • Demonstrated dependability, accountability, and consistent high-quality follow-through to internal and external stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will be a thoughtful, adaptive, and skilled grantmaking professional with a demonstrated ability to design well-informed program strategies, create highly effective infrastructure, and deliver consistent, high-quality work. This person must be committed to ongoing improvement and possess an ability to continuously reflect and develop skills and knowledge to support the work of the Foundation’s grantee partners. Additionally, this person will have excellent communication skills and able to effectively discuss the Foundation’s grantmaking across a variety of settings. This person will be able to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people, have solid judgment, integrity, a positive attitude and demonstrated commitment to the Foundation’s mission and values.
Salary range is $80,000 - $90,000 dependent on relevant experience. This position is full-time, 40 hours per week and will be required to be present in the office at least three days each week, with the option of working virtually two days each week.
