SIOUX CITY COMM SCHOOL DIST is Hiring an Attendance Specialist Near Sioux, IA

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing support to students and families. Identifies and assists students with attendance challenges. Serves as a resource to staff and faculty concerning students. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Provides information to parents in order to assist their children.

Promotes participation of parents in school activities.

Provides referral services to outside agencies as needed.

Identifies with parents reasons for student non-attendance, works toward solutions.

Develops action plans with the family, student, school personnel to establish full attendance in school.

Carries out home visits where appropriate to support parents in encouraging their students to maintain full and regular attendance.

Encourages good relations and effective dialogue between parents and school personnel about student progress.

Coordinate with community service agencies, juvenile probation, outreach, department of human services, and others that provide family support to help improve student attendance.

Stay informed regarding attendance laws, and advise other employees as to pertinent updates or changes in attendance laws and regulations.

Regularly review building attendance reports, conduct attendance research to check dropout trends throughout the district and within particular attendance centers.

Go to the homes of truant students to pick up and deliver the students to school. Obtain a police or other law enforcement assistance when necessary. Follow up on repeated truancies.

Provides small group support to students within the school setting.

In partnership with parents, determine the need for support groups or parenting classes.

Exhibits support for the District’s vision, mission, goals, and priorities.

Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters.

Performs other incidental tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, education, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in social work or related field preferred. Experience working with students and families. Excellent organizational skills and interpersonal and written communication skills are essential.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Strong verbal and written communication skills. Requires frequent communication with public schools, parents, and the general public. Bilingual skills preferred. 

ANALYTICAL and REASONING SKILLS

The individual must also be able to handle a large number of complex tasks and assignments at the same time through effective multi-tasking and time management skills. Ability to work with a variety of data. Problem-solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem-solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines. Attention to detail is necessary. Strong organizational skills required. Multi-tasking is essential. Ability to make decisions with minimal supervision. 

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

The individual must be competent in technology. Must also have the capability to collect and sort data through technology

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Normal office physical demands. May be required to lift up to 50 pounds infrequently. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Generally, the employee works inside. Requires some evening and weekend work, frequent travel throughout the service area, and moderate travel to state and national meetings.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

Will perform other duties as may be assigned by the superintendent or designee, necessary and appropriate to the achievement of the program and/or District goals and objectives.
