Description

Position Summary:

The Pottery Production Technician provides support to all other Pottery employees in all aspects of the production process by performing a variety of duties. The technician will arrive before the first shift to prep materials, work stations, and machinery for all other production staff, performing all required daily tasks. After completion of daily tasks, the technician will perform other tasks given by the manager or by supporting production at various workstations. The technician will be self-directed, ensuring that daily and weekly tasks are completed.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Daily Responsibilities
    • Punctual attendance to help set up production stations
    • Setting up various production stations in the morning, making sure areas are stocked with clay and supplies and any trash/recycling or messes are cleaned
    • Assessing critical inventory such as glaze, carts, clean shelves
    • Immediately preparing/mixing any materials critical to that day’s production
    • Reporting to Pottery Manager immediately of any major production issues
    • Organize carts of greenware and glazed items
    • Replenish clean rags and launder dirty rags
    • Recycle slip and mix more if needed
    • After completion of any production glaze needs, mix glaze tests
    • Assisting production flow by working at any production stations needed
  • Weekly Responsibilities
    • Mix and maintain all test glazes, slips, and washes for production
    • Weekly inventory of clay, pyrometric cones, and raw materials
    • Empty traps, clean sinks, mop floors as needed
    • Clean and organize any neglected areas in the pottery
    • Assist with unloading clay and supply deliveries
    • Maintain organization of production stations
    • Help improve/collect record keeping
    • Clean and oil RAM press decks
    • Refill small containers of materials above work bench in Glaze Lab
    • Clean and wash kiln shelves
    • Clean kiln burners
    • Clean the slip cast benches and floors once a week or as needed
    • Clean hoses, diaphragm pumps, buckets, barrels, and tools.
  • Critical General Responsibilities
    • Adhere to a 40-hour weekly work schedule
    • Navigate glazy account and ERP for inventory or assigned test
    • Adhere to Simon Pearce safety policies
    • Assist with planning and preparation of special events
    • Interact with all levels of personnel on production in a professional manner
    • Maintain a positive attitude despite production or personnel challenges
    • Update Manager of any issues, inventory, or changes in a timely manner
    • Log completed task and inventory needs at the end of each day
    • Perform other tasks and special projects as assigned

Qualifications


Qualifications Required:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and three months’ related experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively and winsomely with co workers and production staff
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memo
  • Ability to write simple correspondence
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Desire to work in the field of ceramics
  • Ability to work without close supervision and establish priorities when presented with multiple tasks
  • Ability to learn the basics of clay and glaze rheology, read and change the volume of a recipe
  • Ability to record data on a computer and use scientific tools accurately
  • Ability to discern when to ask for help and when to transition to other tasks
