Silver Oaks School is Hiring a Second Grade Teacher Near Silver Spring, MD

Silver Oaks Cooperative School is a small, nonpublic, nonprofit elementary school and a close community of educators and families who are passionate about teaching and making learning fun and engaging. As a cooperative school, parents help in the administration and operation of the school. We embrace the outdoors and spend a part of everyday in our playgrounds and outdoor classrooms.We are excited to find the right teacher who will thrive in this unique environment!

Silver Oaks Cooperative School for Grades K-3 will be located at 11612 New Hampshire Ave, 20904.

Educational Philosophy

We are looking for a teacher who believes in:

  • Embracing student-centered teaching strategies, and finding creative ways to help student meet and exceed grade-level expectations,
  • Fostering equitable and inclusive learning,
  • Exploring the natural world and playing/teaching every day outdoors in rain, snow or shine,
  • Teaching empathy and conflict resolution and maintaining a positive learning environment,
  • Fostering curiosity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and independence, and
  • Always treating students kindly!

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a tidy, attractive, and welcoming classroom environment conducive to learning,
  • Collaborate with the Education Director to plan for and implement curriculum units,
  • Teach literacy and math daily through small group instruction using the workshop model,
  • Teach 30 minutes of direct phonics instruction daily,
  • Teach writing, project, science and social studies weekly,
  • Utilizing conflict resolution, Responsive Classroom, and other developmentally appropriate methods of classroom management,
  • Maintain regular communication with parents,
  • Help parents assimilate into the classroom seamlessly as co-opers leading a small group during workshop,
  • Organize end of quarter celebrations for special projects and publishing parties for writers,
  • Assess and maintain student records for each child, and
  • Other responsibilities as needed.

School Nuts & Bolts

  • Maximum class size is 16 students (actual class size is usually 12-15 students),
  • 175 instructional days and 6.5 daily school hours,
  • Daily 50 minute prep period, and half hour lunch period,
  • Begins August 19th, 2024 with the first day of school September 3rd, 2023, and

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Four year college degree, advanced degrees preferred,
  • Two years experience as the lead teacher in a K-5 classroom,
  • Self-reflective educator with a growth mindset,
  • Strong classroom management skills with experience implementing intrinsic motivation and positive classroom management, such as Responsive Classroom,
  • Effective and respectful communication with all adults and children, and
  • Willingness to collaborate closely with parents, teachers, and staff.

Benefits: $56,000-$60,000 starting salary, health/vision/dental insurance, 401k matching, and supportive working environment.
