Sanitation Manager

Location: Perham, Minnesota 

Work Schedule: Hours are variable. Some weekend coverage will be required.

Overview, Essential Duties, and Responsibilities:

Overview

This position is accountable for leading the safe and efficient cleaning and sanitation of the food manufacturing equipment and the surrounding environment in accordance with all Company, Customer, Certification and Regulatory requirements. This position is responsible for establishing a local cleaning and sanitation program inclusive with goals and metrics, employee training & development, defined strategies, procedures, safety, risk management, continuous improvement plans, verification, and validation protocols. Reporting to the Plant Site Director, the Sanitation Manager collaborates with other areas of the operation and external vendors to implement the facility Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS), Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Chemical Programs, and daily operational cleaning. This position manages dedicated and, in some locations, voluntary sanitation personnel from all shifts of the operation. The role supports facility compliance and sanitation records verification.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Implement a cleaning and sanitation program that creates a safe environment suitable for the manufacture of human food and a sustainable culture of sanitation proactively supporting production.

The Foundation:

  • Define the sanitation organization and responsibilities for the site.
  • Establish employee goals and leadership development strategies.
  • Conduct risk assessments and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure the policies and procedures are up to date and communicated to the organization.
  • Train employees to build capability and knowledge in sanitation techniques, work safety procedures, IPM, and teamwork.
  • Build a sustainable culture of safety within the organization.
  • Develop sanitation goals and key performance metrics for continuous improvement and to align with key operational targets. 
  • Develop checklists and other forms to record effectiveness checks and key performance data.
  • Develop operational (daily) cleaning schedules, MSS, and IPM schedules and monitor results of these programs.
  • Plan, manage and modify sanitation personnel schedules, assignments, and cleaning sequences to meet performance standards and MSS requirements.
  • Coach team members in the principles of effective wet and dry sanitation.

Proactive Sanitation:

  • Active in review of projects for hygienic design and environmental risks.
  • Lead the risk assessments in major construction projects in the plant.
  • Active in the Plant Environmental Monitoring program, collaboratively monitoring the environment for pathogens and taking the necessary actions to prevent food contamination.
  • Lead initiatives to be more efficient in water usage, chemical usage, unplanned downtime, and labor.
  • Collaborate with maintenance to develop and improve building and fabric conditions, equipment maintenance work, and reliability.
  • Develop strategies for innovative cleaning solutions.

Sanitation Reliability:

  • Collaborate with the plant leaders to implement Change Management procedures for procedures, chemicals, equipment, and infrastructure modifications.
  • Develop an internal auditing program for sanitation, pest control effectiveness.
  • Implement verification and validation programs for sanitation and IPM.

Perform additional duties as assigned that may include but not be limited to:

  • Serve as the facility primary contact and support for external resources such as chemical vendors, IPM contractors and waste collectors.
  • Serve as department back up for PCQI and SQF Practitioner in absence of Quality Manager.
  • Support policy compliance, procedure execution and records collection to ensure consistently successful audits and inspections
  • Lead or participate in Facility sanitation, food safety, GMP, 3rd party, and/or regulatory audits.
  • Payroll, budget, interview potential employees and vendors to properly support facility.
  • Drive Continuous Improvement Projects in facility, or network.

Role Contribution Level

This position is a manager role. The position requires the incumbent to promote safe, diverse and efficient operations and establish a positive work environment with people working together. The incumbent must effectively accomplish tasks through others and value managerial work; demonstrating an ability to develop cohesive teams by providing effective feedback, coaching, and motivation, including difficult messages.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities; Education; and/or Work Experience Requirements: 

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred in a science-related field but will consider Associates Degree with right leadership qualities.
  • 5 years of experience in a sanitation management or supervision role, preferably in the food processing industry.
  • Certifications in PCQI, Sanitation, food safety are desirable.
  • Leader of Change and Strategic Thinking.
  • Broad knowledge and experience in quality and food safety management gained at successive levels of responsibility in a plant atmosphere.
  • Knowledge of FDA standards and FSMA Regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct, coach, and train associates as well as plan, monitor and schedule work.
  • Lead and able to demonstrate “Best in Class” behaviors with focus on food safety, quality assurance, and plant regulatory compliance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude for proper assembly, use and repair of equipment and communication with equipment vendors.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule.
  • Chemical management, application, and safe handling practices.
  • Knowledge of adult-learning methods for training and coaching individuals and groups.
  • Computer skills: Excel, Word, and Power Point are required.
  • Decision-making and critical thinking skills

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: 

Physical Requirements

  • Walk and stand for a prolonged period of time.
  • Able to be mobile and able to get in and around equipment for inspections.
  • Routinely lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions

The Sanitation Manager position is in a manufacturing environment, which may include exposure to:

  • High temperatures and surfaces.
  • Cleaning chemicals, equipment and the PPE to maintain safety during exposure.
  • Fumes or airborne particles.
  • Moving mechanical parts and vibration.
  • Loud noise level.
  • Food Allergens.
  • Elevated heights.
  • Confined Space.
