Job DescriptionSHAWNEE PUBLIC SCHOOLSJob Title: Painter's Assistant
Reports To: Director of Maintenance and Painter
Site: Shawnee Public Schools – all locations
QualificationsCredentials: Driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Education: HS Graduate. GED, or specialized vocational training in painting and carpentry.
Training or Experience Required: Between 2 to 4 years of directly related experience or training in rough carpentry and painting. Must be experienced in application of paint with roller, brush and spray equipment.
Job Summary: Performs skilled/full journey-level duties under general supervision to repair and paint the schools and related structures. Follows generally standardized operating policies and procedures. On occasion will have to utilize discretion and independent judgment.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Communication Skills (oral, written, or business). Basic communication skills to exchange information, give/receive simple instructions and respond to inquiries. Includes filling out forms.
  • Mathematical Skills: Performs routine computations requiring a knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using whole numbers, fractions, decimals and/or percentages.
  • Reading and Interpreting: Reads and interprets routine written or printed materials such as basic blueprints, charts, diagrams, maps or instructional material.
  • Tools and Equipment Usage: Uses tools or equipment in a manner requiring competence and must meet certain performance standards which normally would be gained by on the job exposure or training. The most complex tools or equipment necessary to perform satisfactory include spray painting with airless and conventional spray equipment.
Essential Job Functions (PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES):
  • Performs general painting of school buildings including both inside and outside; paints furniture and fixtures, playground equipment; paints lines on tennis courts, stripes parking lots, metal poles, etc.
  • Strips and refinishes woodwork. Stains and varnishes. Matches paint colors and textures.
  • Replaces or repairs drywall: tapes, beds, and textures; patches holes in plaster or sheetrock.
  • Installs and repairs ceramic and vinyl tile.
  • Installs and repairs vinyl base.
  • Performs other rough carpentry work of a skilled nature such as:
  • Installs, repairs, remodels all building fixtures, doors, walls, locks, panic devices, molding, windows, furniture, etc. in the district.
  • Performs rough carpentry/framing, hangs drywall and tapes/rocks, hangs/installs suspended ceiling tiles, hangs items for teachers, textures walls in preparation for painting.
  • Lays sub flooring, lays flooring, tile, carpet, etc. Assists with installation of glass and mirrors, etc.
  • Installs, repairs, and builds playground equipment.
  • Operates equipment essential to construction such as tractors, trucks, lifts, and scaffolding.
  • Informs supervisor of parts, equipment and other supplies that are necessary to do the job.
  • Cleans work area and maintains paint shop and tools, including assigned vehicle.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Interprets rules, procedures and policies to assist customers/students and to simplify decision making.
  • Follows health and safety policies and regulations, inclusive of the District Exposure Control Plan for Bloodborne Pathogens and works safely.
  • Adheres to departmental rules concerning dress, attendance, leave usage, etc.
  • Uses creativity and initiative to perform work and to solve problems.
  • Cooperates with and assists other employees/work units.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude towards students, staff, and the public.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used in the performance of work.
  • Frequent travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required.

  • Must be able to stand/walk 6-8 hours.
  • Requires occasional to frequent bending/stooping, squatting/crouching, pushing/pulling, climbing (to 30 feet on occasion or on automatic air lift to change lights/repair scoreboard in gym) and reaching above the shoulders.
  • Occasional crawling/kneeling is required. Requires frequent carrying/lifting up to 35 pounds and occasional lifting from 35 to 90 pounds carrying tool boxes, welding equipment, motors, compressors and equipment.
  • Must possess manual dexterity/visual ability to operate hand and power tools, and ladders safely. Must be able to read labels, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Employee must possess hearing to distinguish normal/abnormal sounds.
  • Must be able to communicate with fellow workers and the public.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and work within confined spaces.
  • Must be able to see problems and dangers in low visibility situations. Requires working on unprotected heights to change out parking lot lights and on roof; use of/close to machinery (boilers/air handlers); working in the outdoors with temperature changes; driving motorized equipment (tractors, trucks, and lifts); exposure to toxic and pressurized gas (Freon), liquids, high voltages and working on live circuits.
Terms of Employment: Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District. (260 day contract)Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Shawnee Board Policy on evaluation of personnel.
