Job Skills / Requirements

Position Summary

The School-Based Health Assistant supports the school-based health program, medical and dental programs by providing assistance with patient registration, scheduling, insurance eligibility, inventory, and other tasks to facilitate patient care.

Note: This role will work in the clinic when the schools are closed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Completes patient registration tasks including but not limited to documenting consent forms in the EHR, scanning documents into the chart, entering insurance information, running insurance eligibility, scheduling patients, checking in and out patients, and attaching insurance to an encounter
  • Conducts data accuracy checks to ensure accurate consent form documentation.
  • Reviews patient eligibility and confirms consent for services
  • Follows school-based health procedures for documentation and follow up
  • Coordinates with school staff to identify children in need of care and conducts outreach to patients in need of services
  • Conducts follow up for patients with urgent care needs and open treatment plans
    • Documents follow up appropriately
  • Prepares follow up correspondence, if needed
  • Corresponds with school and school-based health staff to ensure effective communication and scheduling
  • Follows school-based health procedures for documentation and follow up
  • Links patients to outreach worker for insurance application assistance if they are uninsured or underinsured
  • Assists the School-Based Health Coordinator in increasing school health program participation
  • Assists the School-Based Health Coordinator with tasks to facilitate and improve school-based health services
  • Participates in school-based outreach events and other outreach and community events to promote school-based health and SCHC
  • Coordinates with school staff and Family Resource Centers to meet health needs of students
  • Supports and assists with community oriented dental care programs
  • Assists the Director of Operations with other tasks supporting SCHC and school-based health
  • Supports the operations team with patient outreach, scheduling and support for all service lines
  • Maintains patient confidentiality
  • Strong alignment with SCHC Mission and demonstrates behaviors aligned with SCHC Core Values
  • Other duties as necessary to ensure successful attainment of SCHC goals and objectives

Job Qualifications and Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation to type patient information
  • Skill in operation of a computer and other office equipment
  • Ability to speak and write clearly and concisely
  • Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to sort and file materials correctly by alphabetic and numeric systems 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees and the public
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks to completion
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to respect and appreciate diversity and cultural competence
  • Ability to react calmly in high stress situations
  • Ability to read, understand, and respond to detailed oral and written instructions
