Early-bird Lifeguards

Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety, and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
Certifications — CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid, Current YMCA Lifeguard or American Red Cross, Oxygen Administration (required within 30 days of hire), ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
Must demonstrate Lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA Standards
** Must be at least 16 years old to apply
** Must have reliable transportation
$9* to start
*Rate of pay based on Life Guarding experience.
Shifts Needed:
Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays : 5-8 a.m.
General Function: The Lifeguard’s primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of all swimmers at all times through preventive and responsive practices. Secondary responsibilities include ensuring the highest standard and cleanliness of the pool tank, pool deck and natatorium fixtures. The incumbent is a team player who demonstrates strong decision-making, leadership, interpersonal and verbal communication skills. The incumbent accepts and demonstrates the YMCA character values of Honesty, Caring Responsibility and Respect.
Essential duties and responsibilities: 
  • Practice and provide preventive life guarding and responsive lifesaving. 
  • Continuously scan the pool from the lifeguard chair or will stand/walk around the edge of the swimming pool with a rescue tube.
  • Respond and handle effectively and quickly emergency situations.
  • Provide quality member service by knowing members by name, displaying a pleasant and professional attitude at all times, assisting members, and referring questions or concerns outside of your area of expertise to a supervisor.
  • Maintain up to date certification in all required areas.
  • Change lap lane lines in a timely manner for the appropriate activity.
  • Understand, follow and enforce all swimming pool rules and guidelines. 
  • Perform Natatorium opening and closing procedures.
  • Determine chlorine content and pH value of water with water testing kit as per aquatic schedule and monitor temperatures of pools.
  • Think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate,supervise and remember.
  • Perform opening, closing and securing of large pool and instructional pool.
  • Handle all participate safety issues and policy violation in a professional manner.
  • Record the daily attendance and pool records.
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and trainings, including the “You Are the Y” training.
  • Communicate any changes and/or substitutions directly to your supervisor.
  • When required, depending upon the availability of your schedule, substitute for other Aquatic staff.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Possess and maintain a current lifeguard certification through a recognized organization.
  • Possess and maintain a current CPR for the Health Care Provider/Professional Rescuer or the equivalent by a recognized organization, AED and First Aid.
  • Possess and demonstrate strong decision-making, leadership, interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess and demonstrate an ability to:
    • read, interpret and effectively communicate documents, information and instructions such as safety rules and YMCA policies and procedures.
    • communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances, and communicate swiftly and effectively with emergency personnel over the telephone and in person.
    • perform basic math and writing skills.
    • work within a team of Aquatic and YMCA staff.
    • work with minimum supervision.
Physical Demands:
  • Perform all of the physical demands that are required to become a certified lifeguard.
  • Remain alert with no lapses in consciousness.
  • Sit for extended periods, including in an elevated chair.
  • Move to various locations, including in and around in an elevated chair.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in an aquatic environment, including in water with background noise and perform all needed rescue skills 
  • Operate alone as a lifeguard, without other lifeguards for support.
  • Ability to frequently stand; walk; talk, hear, sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and climb or balance. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and run in cases of emergency.
  • Project voice across aquatic area.
  • Observe all sections of the water environment. Vision abilities required included close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions in swimming pool areas.
