Miami Program Manager

About SAGE:

SAGE is the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ ) older adults. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is a national organization (as well as a local direct service provider in New York City and other communities) that offers supportive services and consumer resources for LGBTQ older adults and their caregivers, advocates for public policy changes that address the needs of LGBTQ older people and provides cultural competency training for aging providers and LGBTQ organizations.

Position Overview:

SAGE Miami Services for LGBTQ Elders is a new program designed to provide critical support to LGBTQ elders in Miami-Dade, with a specific but non-exclusive focus on low-income older adults, to ensure that they have the practical and financial supports they need to live with dignity on a day-to-day basis, and that they have social connections and companionship.

The Program Manager position will perform duties associated with running the program and will supervise other program staff in their day-to-day duties. The position will also provide case management services, conducting client intakes and assessments for stipendiary financial support, conducting a full benefits eligibility review and help elder clients with financial assistance; securing key benefits like Medicare, Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Social Security, and prescription drug assistance; accessing caregiving; and securing appropriate housing, among other critical services. The Program Manager will also administer and oversee the stipendiary program, which will offer direct support to low-income LGBTQ elders in need of temporary financial assistance.

As in all of SAGE’s work, this program and position will emphasize collaboration with local providers and partners.

The SAGE Miami Program Manager assists and provides services to our participants in the SAGE Miami Services for LGBTQ Elders Program as described below.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Engage community partners, consultants, and volunteers who can assist in program events and outreach
  • Supervise other program staff in day-to-day duties
  • Provide case management, information, referrals, and advocacy to SAGE clients and participants in Miami-Dade County
  • Perform new client and participant intakes, including administration of mental health screenings and SAGE’s assessment
  • Conduct a full benefits eligibility review and benefits assistance/counseling to help elders secure key benefits like Medicare, Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Social Security, and prescription drug assistance; accessing caregiving; and appropriate housing, among other critical services; explain eligibility rules, assist with applications, enrollment and/or recertification, and the appeals process
  • Assess clients for stipendiary support and coordinate with outside entities to make stipendiary payments when needed
  • Administer and oversee the stipendiary program, which will offer direct support to LGBTQ elders in need of temporary financial assistance
  • Conduct home visits as needed to homebound older adults
  • Collect and enter all client/participant service unit data and client notes in database(s) thoroughly and in a timely manner (by the end of each day), in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory mandates, as well as fulfilling all other reporting requirements
  • Assist in program outreach, organizing and/or leading presentations as needed to promote the program to outside agencies
  • Develop linkage agreements and referral pathways with other community-based organizations and resources; foster good relationships with external providers to enable linkages
  • Perform other duties as needed or assigned

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • B.A. in social work or a related field, or sufficient salaried experience in a Program Manager or care management job role and/or with LGBTQ older adults
  • Supervisory experience
  • Strong commitment to SAGE’s mission and the LGBTQ community, with particular attention to aging justice, racial justice, transgender justice and disability justice
  • Deep knowledge of the Miami-Dade community and stakeholders
  • Strong partnership and collaboration skills
  • Strong organizational skills with an ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Flexible and dependable – this position requires a seven-hour workday, with an additional one hour for lunch; some occasional evening or weekend hours may be required
  • Willingness to work on-site at local SAGE offices
  • Ability to work independently as well as be an involved member of a team
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-directed and able to work with moderate supervision
  • Computer literate, with knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to learn other pertinent software systems and data bases
  • Ability to travel throughout Miami metropolitan area

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with LGBTQ culture and communities
  • Experience working with aging populations and the public benefits associated with them
  • Familiarity with issues of cultural and linguistic competency with regards to ability, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, gender identity and expression, and other characteristics that affect the lives of diverse older adults
  • Familiarity with social, medical, aging and veteran services networks and supports
  • Fluent in Spanish

Reports to: Director of Special Programs

Status: Full-time/Non-Exempt

Location: Onsite location in Miami, plus travel to various locations within Miami-Dade County, Florida.

Schedule: Full-time, 35 hours/week, Monday – Friday. Occasional schedule adjustments may also be necessary, per program necessity.

Compensation: Salary Ranges from $63k-$68k
