Sensa Recruiting is Hiring a Senior Communications Strategist Near Denver, CO

Senior Communications Strategist

Position: Senior Communications Strategist

Position Type: Part-time

Company/Division: JSI - R & T /Health Services

Location: Any US Office, including Boston, MA

Compensation: $120,000 - $160,000, commensurate with experience

Who we are:JSI, a global nonprofit dedicated to improving lives around the world through greater health, education, and socioeconomic equity for individuals and communities, is seeking an experienced Senior Communication Strategist to join our energetic and collaborative Health Services Division (HSD), working closely with our Denver, CO team. This position will primarily be responsible for developing and implementing environmental health and justice project-based communication strategies.

HSD projects span a wide variety of topics including environmental health and justice, primary care/practice transformation, strategies to advance health and racial equity including addressing social determinants of health, multisector approaches to advancing population health, applied research to build the evidence-base for emerging areas in public health and Tribal health, among others.

How we work:We pride ourselves on being a workplace where people from a wide variety of lived experiences have the freedom to pursue their passions and take an active part in shaping the future of our work. We have a bias toward action: we do research with the explicit intent of influencing policy change and changes in practice. We understand that in order to advance equitable and effective strategies, affected populations need to drive the public health and environmental fields. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team that reflects the diversity of our communities and that can apply their own lived-experiences.

We care about each other as coworkers and as individuals and strive to extend flexibility to staff so that they can manage life, while still meeting the demands of the job. We are currently working in a hybrid environment, where we strive to balance in-person and remote working to meet personal needs as well as create a collaborative environment where we learn from one another and support each other’s success.

About the role:We are hiring a part time (40-60%), Senior Communication Strategist to join our Colorado-based team to lead the communication strategy of a large-scale grantmaking project focused on environmental justice in U.S. Region 8 (Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, and 28 Tribes). This project will provide hundreds of subgrants to community-based nonprofits and other eligible subrecipients for environmental justice assessment, planning, and project development activities and aims to alleviate much of the burden that the federal grants process places on small, resource-constrained community-based organizations supporting underserved communities and marginalized populations.

This role provides overarching management, oversight and structure for the project’s communication deliverables to ensure consistency with project branding and messaging and alignment with partners, is responsible for meeting work plan timelines, and serves as the point-of-contact for public affairs of the funding federal agency. This role will be supported by a communication technical and content support role.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct a communications team in developing communication plans and social media strategies, including social marketing campaigns, traditional media, newsletter, and website presence.
  • Work closely with the U.S. Region 8 Office, other Grantmakers and Technical Assistance Centers to share timely communication updates and success/impact stories.
  • Develop strategy, workplans, and materials to support potential applications and grantees (pre-application and application support, communications for grantmaking and awardee management, etc.).
  • Work in close collaboration with project teams, including graphic designers, to design and develop culturally-appropriate, compelling print and online materials for a variety of audiences and communication channels, including social media.
  • Create content for a variety of audiences and communication channels.
  • Develop training materials and provide technical assistance on communication planning and social media to project teams and grantees.
  • Support evaluation of health communication efforts, including estimating reach and impact of communication activities/media placements through web and social media analytics.
  • Participate in all phases of deliverable development: outlining, research, drafting, editing, layout, and dissemination.
  • Contribute to business development through proposal writing, development of relationships with potential clients, and generation of new project opportunities.
  • Manage projects with a high level of organization and capacity to meet tight timelines.
  • Work collaboratively and communicate frequently with project team members and other JSI staff working locally and in other JSI offices.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in health communication, public health, or related field, and a minimum of 15 years working experience in public health communications or a minimum of 18 years equivalent experience.
  • Past experience in environmental health and/or climate communications.
  • Past experience working with government agencies within the United States.
  • Past experience working in political and high-profile communications.
  • Past experience directing and managing communications teams.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including copyediting.
  • Demonstrated strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to advancing health and equity.
  • An entrepreneurial approach to potential opportunities and challenges and commitment to high-quality client-focused services.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work on multiple tasks and projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with team members, clients, and other key stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat) and integrated marketing platforms (Mailchimp, Constant Contact).
