SEIU CLASSIFICATION

JOB TITLE: Senior Campaign Communications Specialist Grade: PS-3

PURPOSE:

The 2 million members united in the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) are at the forefront of a movement to build power for working people and win Unions for All. SEIU’s Organizing Department is at the center of our union’s campaigning and movement-building, developing and executing sharp, dynamic organizing strategy.

This position is responsible for the Organizing Department’s internal communications, including the development, implementation, and execution of plans and projects to advance our campaigning and contribute to robust departmental systems and structures as part of a thriving, equitable team culture.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and coordinate vibrant, cohesive communications strategies for campaign projects, the Organizing Department’s internal communications needs, and various stakeholder communications outputs.
  • Manage communications for internal events, such as committee and governance meetings, campaign project planning, and regular departmental meetings.
  • Produce internal communications and meeting materials, including PowerPoint presentations, newsletters, fact sheets and backgrounders, flyers or leaflets, and other communications pieces as needed.
  • Monitor media coverage of various campaigns to create and maintain a library of clips; develop strategies for sharing updates across stakeholder groups.
  • Help with overall communications work for the Organizing department as needed, including planning and project management, and coordination with divisions, departments, and the field.
  • Handle sensitive issues that require high levels of confidentiality.
  • Adhere to strict deadlines for completion of all assigned work, with a proactive attitude around tracking deliverables and collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Performs other duties as required to support the department and its mission.

DIRECTION AND DECISION-MAKING:

This position reports to the Deputy Director of Communications for National Organizing, and works as part of the team led by the Organizing Department’s Managing Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A minimum of three (3) years of related work experience OR a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Outstanding writing, verbal, and analytical communication skills, with familiarity and facility of Google Office and various presentation development tools.
  • A high level of judgment, ability to take initiative, and work independently. You must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of SEIU leaders, SEIU members, and staff in complex, political, and often confidential situations.
  • Ability to exercise limited independent judgment and make decisions in consultation with peers or higher-level managers.
  • Desire to continually develop skills related to use of rapidly changing technology and communications best practices.
  • Ability to model consistently the vision and values of the union, as well as our leadership standards, including passion for improving the lives of SEIU members and working people everywhere.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Work in this position will generally be performed in an office setting. However, the job may require work in other settings conducive to performing the tasks required to complete assignments. Must be available for travel, including overnight stays. Travel and work beyond traditional business hours is required.
