General Purpose of Job

This position is responsible to prepare AutoCAD drawings, cable schedules, conduit schedules, and bill of materials for substation projects; prepare drawings for site evaluations and substation modifications; coordinate designs for construction with civil engineers; coordinate designs for construction with protection and controls engineers; keep substation one line diagrams updated and forwarded to appropriate departments; maintain all substation disciplines as-built files and issue as required.

Education

Minimum

2 Year / Associate Degree

Major:

design, engineering, engineering technology or related field

Experience

Minimum

Minimum two (2) years’ experience in the design of electric utility substations and developing construction plans and highly skilled use of AutoCAD.

Preferred

Experience with design components for distribution substations including single line diagrams, general arrangements, and protection systems.

Preferred

Experience or similar work with an electric utility or related industry.

Education and/or Experience Notes

Qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Other Requirements

  • A valid Florida driver’s license for occasional driving privileges of a company vehicle; must have and maintain an acceptable driving record as determined by SECO Energy.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment, including a personal computer, printers, copy machines, telephone, and fax machine.
  • Ability to work irregular hours for assignment completion and flexibility to change scheduling and report to work on short notice during emergency situations.
  • Business travel to all areas of service territory required.
  • Normal work hours shall be eight (8) hours between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check, physical and drug screen.

Driving Requirements: Valid Florida Driver’s License

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to exercise good judgment, sound reasoning skills and discretion in making independent decisions commensurate with responsibilities; ability to maintain confidential information, and effectively manage stress and pressure in a frequently changing environment; ability to multi-task calmly and effectively in all situations.
  • Ability to produce accurate substation site plans, substation general arrangement, and profile drawings.
  • Ability to produce single line, three line, relay panel layouts, AC & DC Elementary, relayinterconnections, and protection wiring diagrams.
  • Business communication skills with ability to read, analyze and interpret job related business periodicals and technical manuals; ability to prepare all types of business correspondence; design and produce reports with a high degree of detail and accuracy; and ability to express technical information clearly and simply while working closely with other personnel.
  • Effective interpersonal and communications skills including written, verbal and listening for interaction with employees, managers, subcontractors, government agencies and others; excellent planning and organizational skills; ability to work independently and productively and results oriented in order to complete assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient in the operation of personal computers, MS Office products, AutoCAD or other similar computer aided design software.
  • Working knowledge of electronic and electric circuit analysis; substation design, structures, relay design and symmetrical components; substation construction and/or commissioning techniques and industry standards.
  • Working knowledge of the NEC, NESC, Design Guide for Rural Substations, Vendor Materials including, but not limited to, switches, insulators, connectors, etc. and other technical materials.
  • English is the primary business language. Second language in Spanish is desirable.

Essential Duties and responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed substation design layouts,steel general arrangements,buss layouts, equipment location, schematics, grounding, control house arrangement, and as-built drawings from Substation Civil Engineer and present for approval by design engineer as assigned.
  • Prepare protection and control designs, wiring diagrams, communication schematics, conduit and cable schedules, bill of materials, and as-built drawings from sketches, and field redlines as assigned.
  • Exchange information and help solve problems with substation civil engineer, protection and controls engineer, and SECO personnel on design and construction issues as directed. Prepare general arrangement modifications relay panel modifications, and communication schematic modifications as assigned. Assign material ID numbering on drawings and checks materials quantities for construction contract.
  • Coordinate drawings with civil and, protection and controls design with consultants, landscaping designers, and local and state permitting offices, etc. Provide necessary documentation (in conjunction with civil engineer and landscape designer) for County and State permit requirements.
  • Prepare as-built substation drawings and keep a current set of drawing for each substation. Perform field visits to ensure accuracy of file drawings.

This position has general office environment with moderate field work and some business travel for training and development. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
