Seattle Public Schools is Hiring a Summer School Program Coordinator - 1.0FTE (260/8) Near Seattle, WA

Overview of Position

Expanded Learning - Summer Semester is designed to support and challenge each student by providing equitable access to a rigorous and relevant curriculum. The goals of this program are to assist elementary and middle school students who demonstrate below grade level performance the extra support for reaching reading and math proficiency in line with the district and state assessments. Expanded Learning - Summer Semester also offers credit retrieval programs. The Summer School Program Coordinator is responsible for the development and implementation of a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) for research-based, data-driven and differentiated instruction to support and challenge each and every student.

Essential Functions

25%

  • Ensures that the summer site meets or makes satisfactory progress towards District standards on the goals in the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP).
  • Develops and establishes curricular needs for summer semester program.
  • Works directly with the Curriculum and Instruction, Early Learning, Special Education, College and Career Readiness and Operational Departments to support and align the summer semester work with the school year.
  • Works in collaboration with community-based partners and the City of Seattle.

  • Visits and checks in on specific needs each day at the summer sites.
  • Confers with Summer Site Leads and assists with problem solving for any student concerns or other challenges.
  • Consults and works with Transportation, Security, Health Services, Communications, and other district departments as needed to support Summer Semester staff and students.
  • Ensures that each of their Summer Site Lead implements daily school structure including supervision of teachers, instructional assistants and the office specialist; visits classrooms; monitors the sites including the arrival and student dismissal and the breakfast/lunch programs.
  • Leads instructional staff in aligning curriculum, instruction, and assessment with state and local learning goals
  • Observes teaching and gives feedback based on best practices instructional strategies.
  • Accesses resources and people to assist instructional staff.
  • Provides for the professional development needs of teachers and staff, as identified in the CSIP.
  • Is knowledgeable about and complies with all relevant State and Federal laws and regulations and Board policies and Collective Bargaining Agreements.

  • Assists the Expanded Learning Department in communicating with families or community partners with concerns or problems.
  • Leads the implementation and evaluation of data-driven CSIP's.
  • Establishes and executes a monitoring plan for student intervention plans and accelerated learning plans (plans that meet individual student needs).
  • Uses data to drive all decisions.

  • Monitors the sites and assists Summer Site Lead to ensure that sites have received the curriculum materials and supplies they need, that staff orientation is conducted during the days before students arrive, and that a plan is developed and implemented for first day orientation for students, handling on-site registrations requests, and communication with families and the local community.

  • Provides weekly reports to the Director of Continuous Improvement and other central staff on Summer Semester progress and any concerns that need to be addressed.
  • Leads a weekly meeting with cross-departmental divisions that have an impact on Summer Semester. Provides updates and next steps.
  • Visits classrooms and uses observation data to give feedback to teachers and to document performance.
  • Monitors, assists, and evaluates staff implementation of school improvement plans and effective instructional and assessment practices.
  • Takes appropriate steps when employees do not meet performance expectations or engage in misconduct.

  • Oversees all hiring of summer school staff including posting of all positions, interviewing and reference checks.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly environment.
  • Prepares emergency procedures and communicates them to students, teachers and staff.
  • Takes quick and appropriate action when student or staff safety is at stake.
  • Maintains and monitors safety and order by being accessible and visible in hallways, on playgrounds, during arrival/dismissal of students, etc.
  • Maintains orderly and clean school sites.
  • Consistently follows-through with reasonable judgment.
  • Administers and manages human resources.
  • Communicates effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Increases understanding and use of current professional skills in technology, systems thinking and other areas.
  • Complies with contracts established by the school and District.
  • Recommends staffing in accordance with District standards and within the focus of the school.

  • Ensures that each site has conducted and reported the pre/post student assessments or grades for credit retrieval, and implements last day close out procedures that need to be completed by all staff.
  • Ensures that Assistant Principals have visually inspected their buildings and reported any problems.
  • Establishes positive relationships with teachers, staff, parents and students with an attitude of appreciation, respect, and the highest level of professionalism.
  • Develops and recognizes teacher/staff leaders. Acknowledges employees who exceed performance expectations. Provides for school, students, staff celebrations so high performance, customs and traditions can be honored.
  • Promotes, maintains and fosters a harassment free environment.

  • Monitors sites for proper implementation of last day close out procedures, collection and return of curriculum materials, and the inspection of the building.

Typical Qualifications

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Five (5) years of teaching experience; a Master's Degree; two years of school leadership experience preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work will be considered.
