Seattle Public Schools is Hiring a Family Educator II - Hdstrt Near Seattle, WA

Overview of Position

Ensures that comprehensive family services, as defined in the Head Start Performance Standards, are provided to the children and families assigned to their classrooms using a trans-disciplinary approach; in partnership with Family Service Providers, this position is responsible to facilitate the involvement of parents in their child's education and to ensure family goal setting is consistent with the family's culture, coordinate the development and implementation of Family Service Plans for each of the families served; serves as the lead and coordinates the following activities: classroom management and design in compliance with program curriculum, comprehensive child screening and assessment, and development of child and family literacy strategies for all families.

Essential Functions

10%
  • Establish and maintain an open, friendly, courteous environment in the classroom and in all contacts with families, program participants, staff and the public; teams with center staff to ensure that classroom and center provide an inviting, nurturing environment reflective of the local community and cultures of participating families to enhance the self-concept of children, families, volunteers and staff.

  • Team with program staff to participate in recruitment, enrollment and orientation of families; actively participates in the family-style process, following Head Start Program Standards, for snacks and meals; may be required to assist children with toileting and teach self-help skills; travel between program sites and to make home visits.

  • Coordinate and implement program approach to provide services to program families which focus on the integration of regular and special education, social services, parent involvement strategies, health and nutrition services in compliance with SPS Head Start work plans, site and federal regulations, and other identified service requirements, i.e., Special Education and Comprehensive Health, to establish individual Family Service Plan(s).

  • Act as primary contact for assigned families and the public; responds to any and all inquiries regarding program services and/or to ensure that the needs of program participants and families are being met in a timely, responsive manner in compliance with program standards.

  • Provide for the development of individual child assessment, working in partnership with the site team, to ensure the completion of child screenings and assessments in all areas, including development, behavior, literacy, health, and dental.

  • Serve as a child development and education specialist for site team; with support from other program staff, creates an individual education plan for each child, incorporating information from parents and all service providers.

  • Plan and provide individualized education program in classroom and home, in compliance with Head Start Program Standards; determines classroom goals and objectives; prepares lesson plans and instructional methods and materials; uses lesson plans and materials necessary to implement program curriculum.

  • Conduct and record regular observations of child behavior, modifying individual child plan as needed; maintains records of child progress and development.

  • Oversee the assessment and planning for child literacy within the classroom and for home carryover and in working with site team staff and community resources; provides for overall family literacy needs in accordance with Head Start Standards.

  • Supports parent's confidence and self-competence to support their child's development and education including, but not limited to, making regular home visits (average of 4-6 per school year), reporting on child's behavior and progress in the classroom; develop, implement, evaluates and revises home-based activities that link classroom and home.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
  • Team with site staff to plan, facilitate, and schedule center meetings and parent involvement activities, including those held during off-shift hours; participate in area meetings, program staff meetings, training sessions, and workshops, including those held during off-shift hours.
  • Facilitates meetings to develop area recommendations for overall program and professional development.
  • Oversees matters related to classroom finances, including record-keeping and maintenance of documentation related to expenditures and recommendations for additional or increased funding.
  • Communicates with team staff on a daily basis to share concerns, evaluates the classroom day and activities, discusses observations of children and/or family participation; maintains confidentiality and integrity of information in all dealings related to program participants and staff.
  • Performs related duties consistent with the scope of the position.

  • Establish and maintain an effective relationship with children, families, staff, the community and the public in a diverse community;
  • Demonstrate communication skills in writing and orally;
  • Work as a team and serve as a lead/site coordinator;
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of information and records;

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education or a closely-related field.
PREFERRED:
Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or a closely-related field.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
If the applicant holds a Bachelor's degree, the Bachelor's degree can substitute for one (1) of the two (2) years of experience requirement.
YEARS of RELEVANT EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years paid or unpaid work experience in a family-centered preschool program is required, experience which included providing classroom management and instruction and coordinating services to meet the health and education needs of the student and involvement of families.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to speak, write, and interpret a second language, in addition to English, such as: Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, or as needed by enrolled families.
CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:
Ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR card and food handler's permit; provide evidence of a current physical examination and regular, periodic examinations every two years or in compliance with current program requirements; provide evidence of successful completion of a TB test in compliance with current program requirements; Valid Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
