Position Summary:

The Vocational Specialist works with clients that have mental, substance abuse, and developmental disorders and assists them to obtain and maintain paid employment. The team member is called upon to work in the community in the role of job developer and job coach and as a counselor to assess and develop necessary work skills in job seekers.

Qualifications:

Required Knowledge, Skills, Licensure, Training & Travel Requirements

Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree in behavioral health field is preferred.
  • A bachelor`s degree is required. 
  • A Qualified Professional is preferred.
  • Attendance at an Individual Placement and Support (IPS) Vocational training is required either before hire or within 120 days after hire.

Work experience:

  • A minimum of 1 year experience working with adults with mental illness and or substance abuse in a vocational capacity.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • General knowledge of IPS vocational services, and practices. 
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Understanding of treatment planning and a Team approach to treatment.
  • Ability to be available for crisis situations and crisis phone rotation.
  • Must complete required Vocational Training (IPS) within 90 days of employment. 
  • Knowledge of recovery principles and community resources concentrating on vocational opportunities.
  • Ability to present members to employers and concentrate on strengths.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Possess knowledge of interventions needed for the members to find and maintain employment.

Interpersonal Skills:

  • Must possess skills in establishing a rapport with members, applying techniques of assessing psychosocial and behavioral aspects of a member’s problems. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members being served by the Assertive Community Treatment Team (ACTT).
  • This person must be able to communicate with other team members in a clear, honest, and open manner. 
  • This employee must be able to establish appropriate professional boundaries and relationships with staff and members consistent with professional practice and professional ethics.

Travel Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License and insurance required.
  • Travel will vary depending on the daily schedule for this position.
  • All travel is in the community where the members live and work.

Essential Job Duties/% of Time:

  • Provide individual, family, or group education to clients about going to work and sustaining work in the community. Continuously develops and implements Evidence-Based Practice Vocational services which emphasize community reintegration. Provides vocational counseling to job seekers. Collaborates with job seekers to identify strengths, limitations, and interests in order to develop realistic vocational plans for finding and maintaining paid employment. Engages with job seekers and facilitates in the development of skills necessary for successful employment in their chosen field. 30%
  • Directly assists members in their daily efforts to build personal recovery skills and habits for self-determination and self-reliance. Organize and facilitate Vocational groups with members offering members, job seeking skills, job development skills, good work habits and monitoring pay so the member does not exceed the limit for keeping Medicaid. Teach new, healthier ways to overcome recovery roadblocks and develop self-esteem. Facilitate client referral to jobs of their choice. Actively encourages the continuing development of independent living skills. 25%
  • Conduct a comprehensive vocational interest assessment. Assume responsibility for developing Person-Centered Plans with the members and the ACT Team while being a contributing member of the individual treatment team (ITT). 20%
  • Teaches career planning, job search skills, models of problem solving, and interpersonal skills in job readiness classes, and facilitates job retention groups. 20%
  • Miscellaneous Responsibilities (performs other duties as assigned/required). 5%
