JOB SUMMARY
As the Director of Rig Innovation & Technology, you will be responsible for leading the development, implementation, and optimization of cutting-edge technology solutions for offshore drilling rigs. You will play a crucial role in driving innovation, improving efficiency, and enhancing safety across all aspects of offshore drilling operations. This role involves fostering a culture of creativity, managing research and development efforts, and staying abreast of industry trends to enhance the company’s competitive edge. Additionally, the Director collaborates with cross-functional teams, evaluates emerging technologies, and formulates strategies to optimize technological resources for business growth.

JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES


Technology Strategy Development:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive technology strategy aligned with the company's objectives and industry trends.
  • Create and maintain the Seadrill vision, roadmap, and multi-year plan for drilling technology, with cross-functional forecasting.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and technological advancements to optimize drilling rig operations.

Team Leadership and Management:

  • Lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers, technicians, and researchers, setting priorities of tasks and monitoring quality of support, to execute technology projects effectively.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to team members to foster professional growth and collaboration.

Research and Development:

  • Stay abreast of the latest developments in drilling rig technology, including automation, data analytics, robotics, and safety systems.
  • Drive research initiatives to explore new technologies and evaluate their feasibility and potential impact on offshore drilling operations.
  • Lead the continued development and maintenance of Seadrill’s Asset Lifecycle Management (ALCM) program, and continued development and success of drilling automation.

Technology Implementation and Integration:

  • Build and maintain Seadrill’s offshore technology portfolio.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate new technologies into existing drilling rig systems and workflows.
  • Oversee the deployment and commissioning of technology solutions, ensuring seamless integration and minimal disruption to operations.

Performance Optimization:

  • Sponsor, develop and maintain Seadrill’s PLATO such that it continues to lead the industry in data aggregation and usage to support Seadrill’s ALCM, performance initiatives, and energy usage and savings awareness.
  • Analyze drilling rig performance data to identify opportunities for optimization and efficiency improvement.
  • Implement data-driven solutions to enhance drilling efficiency, reduce downtime, and minimize operational risks.

Regulatory Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure all technology solutions comply with relevant industry regulations, standards, and safety protocols.
  • Champion a culture of safety and environmental stewardship, prioritizing the well-being of personnel and the protection of the environment.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including operations, procurement, and finance teams, to align technology initiatives with business objectives and budgetary constraints.
  • Stimulate cross-functional sponsorship within the organization for technology initiatives.Drive thought leadership and collaboration on technology initiatives with the rig operations teams, and functional stakeholders.
  • Engage frequently with Executive Committee to obtain agreement on strategy and maintain support for implementation of chosen technology initiatives and targeted investments.
  • Cultivate partnerships with external technology vendors, research institutions, and industry associations to leverage expertise and resources.
  • Represent Seadrill as needed at relevant industry forums.

Commercial and Competitive Environment:

  • Lead efforts to ensure Seadrill keeps its rigs competitive within the industry.
  • Interface with the client and be embedded with the Seadrill Commercial teams to fully understand client needs, wants, and the competitive landscape within the industry.
  • Understand current and anticipated positioning of our competitor’s innovation and technology landscape.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE


Essential

  • Extensive experience (8 years) in offshore drilling operations, with a focus on technology development and implementation, including a wide spectrum of responsibilities involving mechanical, electrical and marine operations.
  • In-depth knowledge of drilling rig systems, equipment, and technologies, including automation, data analytics, and safety systems.
  • Strong leadership skills with a proven track record of leading multidisciplinary teams and driving technology innovation.
  • Proficiency in project management, budgeting, and resource allocation.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively engage and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement in offshore drilling operations.

Desired

  • Experience should include a significant period in a senior leadership position dealing with technical support of the operating drilling fleet.


EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field;
  • Must be a US citizen, or authorized to work lawfully in the United States, without sponsorship from Seadrill.
  • Must be able and willing to work regularly from Seadrill’s Houston office location during typical and customary business hours.
  • Flexible to travel offshore as required in any country Seadrill operates.
  • Must pass Drug Screen and Background Check.


Preferred

  • Advanced degree (e.g., Master's or Ph.D.) preferred.
  • Demonstrated history of working effectively in various offshore marine/subsea settings in the naval sector, and/or oilfield & energy industry.
