Teaching Assistant

Teaching Assistants provide a combination of instructional and clerical support for classroom teachers. They support and assist children in learning class material using the teacher's lesson plans. Teacher Assistant position for the 2023-2024 school year to begin August 2023

Essential Job functions:

  • Students at Seacrest are expected to be active in their learning process and the classrooms are expected to be a positive and engaging environment. Teamwork with colleagues, the parents and the student are expected as Seacrest strives to reach each student and push them individually
  • Teaching Assistants work with students individually or in small groups-listening while students read, reviewing or reinforcing class lessons, or helping them find information for reports.
  • Will be asked to take over classroom duties when the regular Teacher is unavailable
  • Teaching assistants supervise students in the classroom, playgrounds, hallways, and on field trips.
  • Assist in recording grades, setting up equipment, and preparing materials for instructions.
  • Prepare and present displays of students' work/ bulletin boards as requested by the Teacher
  • Teaching Assistants may grade tests and papers, check homework, keep health and attendance records, do word processing and filing, and duplicate materials.
  • They also may stock supplies, operate audiovisual equipment, and keep classroom equipment in order.
  • After the academic day, Teaching Assistants are responsible for staffing our After-School Program with groups of students of different age ranges on the playground, common areas or gymnasium.
  • Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance
  • Attend team and staff meetings
  • Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety
  • Meet community obligations including but not limited to adhering to deadlines and
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other Model professional and ethical standards when communicating with students, parents, peers and community.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Leadership Team.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Competencies/ skills and abilities: Teaching assistants should enjoy working with children from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and be able to handle classroom situations with fairness and patience. Teacher assistants also must demonstrate initiative and a willingness to follow a teacher's directions. ·
  • Education: on-the-job training. A college degree or related coursework in child development improves job opportunities.
  • Experience: past work with young children
  • Computer skills: word processing
  • Certificates/licenses: depending on age group, may need DCF certification or training • Other: willing to take basic first aid and CPR training
Requirements:
  • Fingerprinting and background checks are a required part of employment eligibility process.
  • References and employment verification
  • Teachers are required to hold at least a Bachelor's Degree from a regionally-accredited institution of higher learning, with a majority of coursework in the subject they wish to teach.
  • Transcripts from all degree programs will be requested as part of the hiring process.
Physical Abilities required:

  • Mobility- Teaching Assistants spend much of the time standing, walking, following, or kneeling with students in the classroom and playground. If this activity is not possible, accommodation will need to be discussed that does not affect the safety of the students.
  • Climate - Will move with the students outdoors; supervising recess and dismissals when weather allows, and traveling on field trips inside and outside. Work is performed primarily in classrooms and outdoor settings, in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and evening shifts. Managing many children is often stressful with much movement.
  • The noise level in the work environment is often moderate to loud.
  • Strength - Requirements are moderate i.e. occasional lifting of 30 pounds (such as equipment or assisted lifting of a hurt child) with frequent lifting/carrying of items less than 10 pounds (such as grade book, test papers, reports).
  • Communication - must be able to communicate age appropriate directions, exchange ideas, understand student concerns/questions, and provide classroom instruction with the students.
  • Mental acuity - must be able to supervise students as the sole adult in the classroom.
