Scribe Video Center, Inc.

Scribe Video Center is a media arts education center located in Philadelphia that provides instruction in video, film, audio and other forms of digital media production. Founded in 1982, Scribe works with emerging and mid-career artists, as well as with members of community organizations, who wish to make use of video as an artistic medium and as a tool for progressive social change. Though focused on a constituency in the Delaware Valley region, we collaborate with media arts centers and filmmakers nationally and internationally. "Scribe" is a metaphor for the use of electronic media as the modern medium to record significant contemporary concerns and events.

The mission of Scribe is to be a knowledge resource and workspace for the use of time-based media as a creative tool for progressive social change. We support our educational program participants in developing a creative practice of media production with the goal of empowering individuals and strengthening communities that have been historically disadvantaged. In the Philadelphia area this includes the African-American, Latinx, Asian-American, and Indigenous communities; youth and seniors; women and non-binary individuals and communities; the LGBTQ community; the differently abled; poor and working class communities. Each year over 300 participants enroll in the multi-week media production workshops at Scribe.

The Staff Producer/ Coordinator of Community Productions, a newly funded position at Scribe Video Center, supervises production programs and projects, including community media collaborations and other special projects. Production projects at Scribe include works developed by individual artists through our workshop program, short documentaries produced collaboratively with neighborhood groups, youth media productions, audio documentaries distributed as podcast and radio programs, and digital media productions created for other time-based media platforms, such as site specific installations.

We are looking for a talented media artist with a deep and demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of Scribe. The Staff Producer will have a solid range of production experiences in documentary, narrative/scripted films, new media platforms and audio production. The Staff Producer will ideally have a background in both producing and the technical craft of media making.

The Staff Producer works with the Executive Director and Managing Director to develop budgets and work on timelines for commissioned projects, as well as assembling and hiring crew. Project management is a key role of the Staff Producer, making sure projects are realizing in accordance with the original project goals, on a schedule and budget as planned.

The Staff Producer also supervises Scribe’s on-going community media, youth, oral history and audio production projects – insuring that they are of high technical quality and that the program participants have the resources necessary to create their work.

The work of the Staff Producer/Coordinator of Community Productions includes:

  • Project manager for Scribe’s on-going community media programs (including the Precious Places Community History Project, Community Visions, Muslim Voices);
  • Guiding productions that develop from our educational curricula,
  • Line producer for newly commissioned works, including site specific video installations;
  • Assisting peer organizations in adopting participatory production methodologies developed at Scribe.

We are looking for candidates with the following experience:

  • Five years experience in documentary media production;
  • Strong body of work that has been exhibited and distributed in multiple venues or platforms (including festivals, broadcasts, theatrical, community screenings)
  • Solid experience in multiple roles of documentary production
  • Production experience with a variety of traditional and new platforms for digital media (e.g. audio, video, VR, AR, site specific installation)
  • Knowledge of the independent media community in Philadelphia region
  • Teaching experience at the community media arts center, college or university level.
  • Fluent in English. Highly desirable if fluent in Spanish or other languages of communities in the Philadelphia region
  • MFA or equivalent experience.

This Staff Producer/Coordinator of Community Programs is a 1/2 to 3/4 time position with health care, vacation, holiday and retirement savings benefits.

Scribe Video Center serves a broad and diverse constituency. We strive for a staff that mirrors the diversity of our region.
