Scottsdale Unified School District is Hiring a District Athletic Director Near Phoenix, AZ

PAY GRADE: Administrative N
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
Position ObjectiveThe job of District Athletics Director is for the purpose/s of managing the District's K-12 interscholastic programs and ensuring compliance with District, State and Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines. The District Athletic Director promotes extracurricular athletic activity that fosters skill development, understanding of sports, and appreciation for a variety of athletic activities and programs, teaming, and sportsmanship for students and adults.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
  • Oversees the development of extracurricular athletic programs that bridge student academic success with interscholastic participation in alignment with the District’s Strategic Plan.
  • In collaboration with school site athletic directors ensures a proactive approach to student success through the development of physical and academic eligibility requirements for participation in each sport.
  • Monitors strict observances of equality of opportunity in boys’ and girl’s athletics by keeping informed of legal requirements and consulting and directing staff regarding compliance with the law.
  • Provides professional development opportunities for site administrators, site athletic directors, coaches, and support staff.
  • Oversees and assists sites in the development and implementation of plans, and recommends actions to ensure compliance with the district, state, AIA, NCAA eligibility, and Title IX policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines. Monitors this process and provides information to supervisor and/or Superintendent.
  • Actively recruits coaches and certified Athletic Trainers for District athletic programs and collaborates with site administrators to interview and recommend selection of all head coaches.
  • Directs, manages, and coordinates all District athletic programs and facilities in collaboration with all site and district administration.
  • Coordinates program components, support needs and materials, master athletic calendar for middle and high school game schedules, all transportation requests, teaching, and coaching assignments, etc.
  • Coordinates the selection and compensation of sports officials/referees for on-site events and represents the district for the purpose of securing the highest possible quality of officiating.
  • Supervises the development and maintenance of an athletic handbook for staff, parents, and students that incorporates state law, board policy, and AIA bylaws.
  • Plans, organizes, and coordinates all District athletic banquets.
  • Ensures athletic management registration system is maintained, updated, and prepared for utilization.
  • Maintains records and documents as required and necessary to ensure proper documentation of athletic program activities, events, participation, and related information for the purpose of complying with school policies as well as applicable laws and regulations.
  • Coordinates the work of the athletic directors at the high school and middle school level and provides input to the principal related to the evaluation of the high school athletic director evaluation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned for the purpose of supporting district objectives.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions In This Class Typically Require)
  • Bachelor’s degree in job-related area
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum three years (Five years preferred) of athletic administrative experience at the high school level
  • Three years of Head Coaching experience
  • Arizona Administrative Certificate required
  • Experience interpreting AIA rules, awareness of athletic liability issues and experience in managing school budgets to include bid preparation and allocation of funds
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training, or education
KNOWLEDGE (position Requirements At Entry)KNOWLEDGE is required to perform advanced math; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; various position specific information learned on the job.

Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicate with diverse groups; implement established curriculum; meet deadlines and schedules; record keeping.
Physical RequirementsPositions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
