Position Summary

School of Government Services, Inc. assists faculty and staff at the UNC School of Government in carrying out its important mission: to improve the lives of North Carolinians by engaging in practical scholarship that helps public officials and citizens understand and improve state and local government. It is a nonprofit corporation and an official associated entity of the School of Government at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

As the largest university-based local government training, advisory, and research organization in the United States, the UNC School of Government offers up to 200 courses, webinars, and specialized conferences for more than 12,000 public officials each year. The activities of School of Government Services include assisting the School with or carrying out research, consulting, advising, trainings and educational workshops and seminars, and other services and projects.

The Information Technology (IT) Division supports the information technology needs of faculty and staff by collaborating to identify innovative ways to extend the School’s mission. Dedicated to high-quality, thoughtful solutions, the IT team works with faculty and staff to make information and learning experiences accessible and engaging for the School’s clients. Daily operations of the IT Division include service and support, research and development, consultation and guidance, as well as infrastructure and system maintenance.

Assist with the development, support, and maintenance of enterprise applications throughout the organization; provide support to application development team members on projects and various other tasks related to the updating and maintaining of customized system applications; develop CMS based applications and instructional tools; provide tiered support for the all applications developed within the Applications team.

Position Funding: This position is contingent upon the continuing availability of funds.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as lead for the Applications Team support ticketing system. Analyzeall tickets and bring to a solution, or escalate to the appropriate team member in a timely manner.

  • Responsible for creating, implementing, and maintaining WordPress application solutions for the School’s faculty and external clients.

  • Communicate status updates to stakeholders, develop and deliver instructional materials, and provide specific support and best practices information.

  • Interact with faculty, operations, marketing, design teams, and outside vendors to coordinate and collaborate on projects from briefing to final closing

  • Develop and manage project timelines estimating effort and monitoring progress on a regular basis to ensure timely delivery; accountable for keeping multiple projects on track and meeting deadlines.

  • Participate in strategy and operational discussions that impact the entire team as well as other individual functions. Regular communication about projects to other members of the Division is critical. Must contribute to fostering a collaborative team environment within the Division.

  • Experienced technical resource and ability to work without guidance. Ability to understand and dissect complex problems quickly. The ability to do rapid application development – early and continuous delivery of development and design.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL.

  • Intermediate level experience with WordPress is requiredalthough experience with other CMS platforms such as Drupal or SharePoint preferred.

  • Applies standard and nonstandard technology applications and, adapts to changing technologies and priorities.

  • Independently applies judgment to technical work assignments to manage time and implementation within estimates.

  • Associate degree in Computer Programming and one year of experience in application consulting or development; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary Range: $55,000-$65,000 (salary based on experience)
