Description
JOB SUMMARY:
The Special Education Coach uses specially attained knowledge and expertise, educational training, and experience to strengthen the skill of special education teachers and support staff in order to increase student achievement. The special education coach will spend a majority of the time supporting IEP teams and coaching/modeling for staff how to provide a successful, supportive program for students with challenging behaviors.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
:
  • Works positively and constructively with staff, families, and students across the district to discover and develop special abilities and strengths of students, in order to find solutions for school challenges related to unique psychological or disciplinary problems a student is having that may be across settings (due to family relations, health, emotional adjustment, etc.).
  • Provides de-escalation strategies, teaching, and modeling to staff who work with students who are experiencing emotional and behavioral outbursts and other challenges.
  • Assists students in making realistic assessments of their abilities and supports them in reaching their educational and behavioral goals.
  • Models the district Vision of “all means all” and demonstrates a willingness to become an active contributor to the school culture and our continual school improvement process.
  • Works cooperatively with Special Education teachers to modify curriculum as needed for special education students according to Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Attends school building team and student IEP meetings as appropriate or directed.
  • Assists with developing IEP goals and objectives.
  • Assists with development of visuals and other learning tools as needed.
  • Uses data to make informed decisions about students regarding behavior and academics.
  • Becomes proficient in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) and related record keeping.
  • Provides direct support to staff and/or students when there is a need for restraint or seclusion of a student and maintains all required documentation and follow-up procedures and records.
  • Works as part of the school team to maintain accurate and comprehensive student behavioral records.
  • Participates in transition planning and preparation for everyday experiences for students.
  • Takes responsibility for professional growth and development needed to support special education services and programs in the district and maintains a current knowledge base in accordance with special education state and federal laws.
  • Attends staff meetings as well as serves on staff and district committees as requested.
  • Participates in various meetings (e.g., parent conferences, site meetings, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information.
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day (if applicable).
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the special education WI Educator Standards, district teaching expectations and delivery of the WI content standards, and federal or state laws pertaining to students.
  • Participates in collaboratively evaluating and strengthening building supports for student behavior.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by Administration.

  • Effectively engages students in learning by using a variety of instructional strategies in order to meet individual learning needs.

4. Assessment For and Of Learning
  • Systematically gathers, analyzes, and uses relevant data to measure student progress, guide instructional content and delivery methods, and provide timely feedback to students, parents, and stakeholders.

5. Learning Environment
  • Uses resources, routines, and procedures to provide a respectful, safe, positive, student-centered environment that is conducive to student engagement and learning.

6. Professionalism
  • Demonstrates behavior consistent with legal, ethical, and professional standards, contributes to the profession, and engages in professional growth that results in improved student learning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Valid license in Special Education, Speech/Language Pathologist, or a School Psychologist from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
  • Master’s degree in the education field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Valid Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Certificate.
  • Extensive experience working with students with Emotional Behavioral Disorders and Autism and other conditions that result in challenging student behaviors.
