Description

Department: Child Well Being and Family Wellness

Program: San Diego Emergency Shelter

Status: Regular Part Time – 20 hours

Pay: $21.87 per hour

Work Schedule: Flexible to work evenings and/or weekends (various shifts available). 

SBCS Corporation operates a 24/7 year-round confidential, emergency shelter program for victims of domestic violence and their children. Services include 24-hour emergency shelter, food, transportation, 24-hour crisis hotline, psychological support and peer counseling, referrals to community resources, and community education and outreach.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direct supervision of the Program Coordinator of Facilities, the Cleaning Maintenance Associate is responsible for maintaining clean and orderly shelter facilities. Dependability, responsibility, efficiency, and the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully are mandatory skills.

DUTIES:

  • Responsible for maintaining clean and organized shelter facilities. 
  • Responsibilities include dust mopping, damp mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, polishing, windows, and moving furniture. 
  • Routinely clean, mop, scrub, polish, and disinfect all bathrooms, kitchens, and all high touch surfaces.
  • Empty trash and garbage containers in all assigned areas.
  • Perform heavy cleaning duties such as cleaning floors.
  • Organize custodial closets and spaces.
  • Maintain working condition of cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to follow established safety precautions and infection control practices when performing tasks and when using equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with general cleanliness and safety of facility, including cleaning-up spills.
  • Assist with cleaning client units upon move out from shelter.
  • Maintain detailed and thorough cleaning logs.
  • Perform the day-to-day housekeeping functions as assigned. 
  • Report incidents and maintenance issues as required by supervisor.
  • Remain flexible and easily adapt to crisis situations. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED or 1 year of experience in a similar position
  • Prior professional cleaning maintenance experience preferred.
  • Ability to complete job duties that are guest and housing focused and trauma informed. 
  • Possess a high level of tolerance and understanding for individuals who present for services with high-risk needs.
  • Ability to communicate positively and appropriately with residents, families, community members, and other employees.
  • Able to carry equipment and supplies from floor to floor.
  • Position requires ascending or descending stairs using feet and legs.
  • Able to operate and maintain all housekeeping/laundry equipment (i.e., buffing machines, etc.)
  • Must be detail oriented and maintain high standards of cleanliness in public areas.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population, possess cultural competency, and maintain appropriate boundaries with clients. 
  • Motivated, self-starter and proactive team member
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English. 

Condition of Employment

  • Employment may be conditioned upon satisfactory completion of certain background clearances which may include a Department of Justice criminal background check requiring my fingerprints (Live Scan), screening through the National Sex Offender Public Website, physical exam, drug test, tuberculosis (TB) test, and such additional clearances as may be required under the program. 
  • Candidates/employees who have received a conditional offer of employment will be required to undergo testing for controlled substances, in accordance with the County of San Diego's drug and alcohol policy and the federal Controlled Substances Act.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Stand: Remaining on one’s feet in an upright position for most of the shift. 
  • Walking: Requires a substantial amount of moving about on foot. 
  • Lifting: Requires a substantial amount of raising or lowering an object from one floor to another floor (includes upward pulling) 40-80 lbs 
  • Carrying: Transporting an object, usually holding it in the hands or arms, or on the shoulder 
  • Pushing: Exerting force upon an object so that the object moves away from the force. 
  • Pulling: Exerting force upon an object so that the object moves toward the force (includes jerking) 
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending stairs, using feet and legs or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. 
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching.
  • Stooping: Requires a substantial amount of bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles. 
  • Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands. Fingers are involved only to the extent that they are an extension of the hand.
  • Finger Movement: Picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling. 
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Talking is important for those activities in which workers must impart oral information to clients or to the public, and in those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
