Personal Care Assistant
Position Title: Personal Care Attendant
Supervisor’s Title: Wellness Director
Needs: 1st Shift Full Time - 2nd Shift Full Time - 3rd Shift Part Time
General Statement of Responsibilities: The Personal Care Attendant is responsible for providing nursing care to resident in the areas of daily hygiene, toileting, feeding, moving safely to activities and other functions, and maintaining the cleanliness and care of the resident’s room.
Major Job Duties:
1. Assist residents with daily hygiene to include: bathing/showering, shampooing and combing hair, shaving, oral/teeth-denture cleaning, nail care, and applying lotions.
2. Assist residents in dressing i.e., dressed for the day, dressed to go out, dressed for bedtime.
3. Assist residents with toileting as necessary, empty, and clean bedpans and urinals.
4. Assist residents at mealtime to include feeding assistance as necessary and report residents’ food intake and output as requested as well as any significant change in residents’ eating habits. Documentation of food and fluid intake on flow record.
5. Fill residents’ water pitchers and make sure glasses are available which are cleaned and sanitized.
6. Assist residents: in and out of bed or chairs as necessary, in accessing various areas of the facility, getting to meals, activities, and other functions. Use a wheelchair when necessary.
7. Assist in the cleanliness of the resident’s room: wipe and clean over bed tables, change linens on beds; clean and organize resident’s drawers and closets, ensure residents have sufficient supplies.
8. Assist in the care and handling of resident’s laundry and ensure resident’s laundry is properly folded and put away in resident’s room.
9. Respond to residents’ call lights or buzzer promptly.
10. Immediately report any resident incident, noticeable change in condition to the Director of Nursing or Charge Nurse.
11. Assist in the straightening and in the cleanliness and neatness of the linen storage area.
12. Project a friendly, helpful, caring, and enthusiastic attitude to residents and their families.
13. Follow all resident care plans and approaches.
14. Ensure documentation is complete and accurate prior to the end of shift.
15. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing, the Charge/Registered Nurse, or Administrator related to the resident care or overall maintenance of the facility operations.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities In: General Personal Care Attendant practices and techniques such toileting, bathing, showering, proper, and safe lifting techniques; general behaviors and traits of geriatric population and how to work effectively; ability to read and write, ability to follow written and verbal directions; ability to work as a treatment/health team member; ability to show interest and care to residents and their families; knowledge of: sanitation, universal precautions and safety; ability to work varied schedules to include weekend shifts, and be prompt and consistent in maintaining work schedule.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to physically assist residents in toileting, showering, bathing, walking; must be able to physically assist residents in and out of wheelchairs, in and out of bed, in and out of chairs, etc., must be able to physically assist residents in walking and mobility; must be able to physically walk and move about the facility; must be able to stand and walk/move about the facility for an eight hour shift, must be able to bend and stoop. Must be capable of exerting 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally (less than 1/3 of the time), and/or excess of 25-50 lbs. of force frequently and up to 10-25 lbs. constantly; must be able to move objects, equipment, and residents. Must be capable of regularly standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, and crouching; must use hands to manipulate tools, equipment, or controls; reach with hands and arms, balance, lift, and perform medium to maximum transfer assists with elderly residents. Must have visual and hearing acuity sufficient to assess resident’s safety and ability.
