Savannah-Chatham County Schools is Hiring a Captain of Professional Standards and Accreditation Unit Near Savannah, GA

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Under the Board of Education Police Department, Chief of Police, the Captain of Professional Standards and Accreditation, is tasked with overseeing internal affairs investigations and managing the accreditation process to ensure compliance with state and CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) standards. The Captain operates within the Professional Standards Unit, which focuses on maintaining the highest standards of conduct and performance within the department.

SALARY SCHEDULE: A-4

WORK DAYS: 250


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education Level: Bachelor Degree in Justice Administration, Public Administration, or a related field;

Preferred: Advanced degree preferred

  • Experience, Skill, and Certification:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in law enforcement with a demonstrated understanding of internal affairs investigations and accreditation processes
  • Demonstrated understanding of internal affairs investigations and accreditation processes
  • Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a law enforcement agency is preferred
  • Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) certification as a police officer
  • The ability to interpret and explain laws, rules, policies, procedures, and apply them appropriately
  • Knowledge of training/teaching techniques for law enforcement personnel
  • Knowledge of Board policies and procedures
  • Eligible for Georgia Professional Standards/Management Post Certification
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to effectively manage personnel and navigate sensitive and complex situations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, including the capacity to interact professionally with diverse stakeholders
  • Attention to detail and the ability to conduct thorough and impartial investigations
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills to assess complex situations and make informed decisions
  • Proficiency in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and training programs
  • Conflict resolution skills to address issues within the department and with external parties
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, with the capacity to interact professionally with departmental staff, external agencies, and community stakeholders
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and best practices related to law enforcement operations, internal affairs, and accreditation
  • Commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and transparency within the police department

Preferred:

  • Any additional certifications related to internal affairs investigations or accreditation processes would be advantageous
  • Familiarity with state and CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) and Georgia (POST) certification standards
  • Six Years of law enforcement supervisoryexperience
  • Possession of the Supervisory/Management Post Certificate


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Conduct thorough and impartial internal affairs investigations into allegations of misconduct, policy violations, or criminal behavior by department personnel and ensuring the integrity and professionalism of the police department.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures related to internal affairs investigations, ensuring adherence to legal standards and departmental protocols.
  • Collaborate with the Chief of Police and other departmental leaders to address systemic issues identified through internal investigations and implement corrective actions, as necessary.
  • Manage the accreditation process, including the preparation of documentation, coordinating site visits, and ensuring compliance with state and CALEA standards.
  • Serve as a liaison with external accrediting agencies, providing updates on departmental policies, procedures, and performance metrics.
  • Provide training and guidance to departmental personnel on ethical conduct, professional standards, and compliance with accreditation requirements.
  • Stay abreast of developments in law enforcement practices, regulations, and accreditation standards, recommending adjustments to policies and procedures as needed

  • Maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Incumbents will be considered “at will.” This position is considered to be “essential personnel, critical staff” when there is an event that creates security challenges or disruptions to district operations. This position may be required to work during identified periods of an emergency as defined in Policy Regulation GBRB-R, Title: Professional Personnel Time Schedules. Appropriate pay will be determined based on the Grade as determined by Human Resources and allowable experience. The work calendar will be 250 days.

  • Performs work safely in accordance with department safety procedures and the County Safety Program.
  • Operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work condition or practice to supervisor.
