Pay: $17.52-$18.86/hour

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Individuals will need to be able to provide a fun, personally challenging growth experience for all outdoor recreation participants. An Outdoor Recreation Instructor creates a safe, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals promoting safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. An Outdoor Recreation Instructor is part facilitator, mentor, teacher and technician.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Must provide excellent customer service, be friendly and attentive to all guests and campers
  • Must be physically, mentally, and emotionally present during events.
  • Must show competency in the technical skills associated with the Outdoor Recreation operation.
  • Must display leadership in debriefing and closure for each activity.
  • Must demonstrate confidence when speaking in front of groups. This includes participants and other staff.
  • Maintain and inventory equipment before and after each event.
  • Must be responsible for ensuring the safety of each participant and demonstrate a clear understanding of the risks involved in each activity.
  • Must be able to clearly instruct the facilitation of games, initiatives and all other Outdoor Recreation activities.
  • Must complete daily paperwork documenting operations and properly handling incidents per SRYMCA policy.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to use sound judgment to ensure safety throughout every event.
  • Must be able to handle unexpected circumstances and have a good understanding of group management.
  • Must be able to perform physically demanding work in the outdoors under harsh weather conditions, on uneven terrain, and at a height.
  • Must have skills verified by an accredited ACCT organization that show the ability to work on the Ropes Course.
  • Must be team oriented and dedicated to the goals set by the SRYMCA Outdoor Recreation department.
  • Willing to work as a team with co-facilitators and visiting teachers.
  • Must have the ability to work with diverse groups of people and group sizes.
  • Will complete daily inspections.
  • Must have the proper understanding and ability to setup and take down Outdoor Recreation elements and properly store them.
  • Must review ropes facilitation techniques regularly.
  • Must review and practice emergency procedures regularly.
  • Responsible for keeping the physical area clean and clear of any hazardous materials.
  • Must communicate to leadership any potential concerns or hazards
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Will obtain a level 1 Ropes Course Practitioner Certification from an ACCT accredited organization on May 28th and 29th, 2024 at the SRYMCA. 
  • Must have 2 years of experience from other course operation hours on an adventure course.
  • Excellent human relation skills and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of the YMCA and its capacity to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities. The ability to articulate and model YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibilities are essential.
  • Have previous experience with belay techniques and facilitating groups be committed to skill practices sessions and certification trainings.
  • Must have the mental and emotional maturity to create safe positive atmospheres for the personal experience and growth of participants.
  • Must arrive an hour before an event and plan on an hour after an event.
  • Must be willing to work weekend in addition to week day events. 
  • Must maintain the following certifications; CPR Pro, First Aid, Presidium “Child Abuse Prevention” Training Adventure Course Level 1 Certification, Wilderness First Aid (as needed), Wilderness 1st Responder (as needed)

  • The employee must lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
