Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is Hiring a Transit Maintenance Supervisor Near San Jose, CA

VTA's Maintenance Division is seeking a reliable and motivated Transit Maintenance Supervisor with experience in heavy diesel & electronic repair to join their team.
The Ideal Candidate

As a Bus Maintenance Supervisor, you will play a critical role in meeting safety protocols and assuring our service requirements are met. The ideal candidate should have the flexibility to work all shifts, weekends, and holidays when needed. They should also possess strong communication and interpersonal skills. Most importantly, this individual will be focused on encouraging a safe and productive work environment.

Definition
Under general supervision, the Transit Maintenance Supervisor coordinates and supervises a shift involved in bus maintenance and repair, light rail maintenance and repair, or facilities maintenance and repair.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the first full supervisory level in bus, rail, or facilities maintenance and repair. Positions in this classification perform supervision and administrative activities on an assigned shift. The next higher class of Maintenance Superintendent manages the overall activities of a bus or light rail maintenance facility or an overhaul and repair facility, and supervises this classification.
About the Bus Maintenance DivisionVTA buses are maintained at three bus operating divisions - Chaboya, North, and Cerone. The Cerone Overhaul and Repair department provides heavy repair, component rebuild, an electronics shop, upholstery and additional maintenance services. Bus Maintenance includes timely and reliable maintenance, preventive maintenance, inspections, and transit bus and service equipment servicing.

After a bus returns from revenue service at the end of each day, Maintenance pulls the cash vault, analyzes the driver defect card, fuels the bus, cleans the interior and exterior, cleans and/or replaces seats and windows, and removes and repairs any vandalism or graffiti. Regular preventive maintenance is performed at prescheduled cycles every 2,000, 6,000, 12,000, and 24,000 miles, as well as in preparation for winter and summer driving conditions, to ensure optimal performance, efficiency, safety and reliability.

The Overhaul and Repair department provides paint and body repair, upholstery, farebox repair, electronics repair, component overhaul, and the heavy repair/rebuild of engines, transmissions, and other components. The Road Call Maintenance unit is part of Running Repair/Corrective Maintenance and performs diagnostic and minor field repairs to VTA buses in revenue service.

Typical Tasks
  • Plans, schedules, and supervises the maintenance and repair of buses, light rail vehicles, other VTA vehicles, and/or facilities;
  • Supervises and coordinates the daily activities of a bus maintenance and repair facility, light rail maintenance and repair facility, or facilities maintenance and repair program;
  • Supervises, counsels, and disciplines subordinate personnel;
  • Determines work priorities and establishes shift schedules;
  • Directs the fueling and cleaning of the bus fleet; directs cleaning of light rail vehicles;
  • Assigns work details to crew leaders and individual workers;
  • Coordinates with Operations on bus or light rail vehicle assignments, pull-in, pull-out, and exchanges;
  • Assures compliance with provisions of equipment warranties;
  • Assures control of tools and equipment;
  • Investigates industrial injuries and accidents;
  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations, performs safety training, and supervises safe work practices;
  • Makes estimates of labor, time, costs, and materials;
  • Serves as a department representative in interaction with other VTA departments and outside agencies;
  • Observes and reports on the condition of transit property and vehicles;
  • May represent VTA at disciplinary hearings;
  • Prepares a variety of reports, correspondence, and forms;
  • Prepares written reports, documents defects and repairs on inspection forms, work orders, or designated computer programs;
  • Operates computer for related data input and retrieval;
  • Responds to calls 24 hours a day 7 days a week;
  • Performs related duties as required.
Employment Standards
Sufficient training, education and administrative and supervisory experience to demonstrate possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Development of the required knowledge, skills and abilities is typically obtained through a combination of training, education and experience equivalent to two (2) years of experience in transit vehicle or facility maintenance and repair and one (1) year of supervisory or lead experience.
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and the ability to qualify for and maintain a Class B license is required. An LRV operator certification may be required for some assignments.
Knowledge of:
  • Principles of supervision, training, scheduling, motivation and discipline; 
  • Industrial and general safety rules and regulations as applied to a maintenance shop;
  • Hazardous material handling, storage, and disposal;
  • Laws, ordinances, and regulations governing air quality, water quality, environmental issues, and public utilities;
  • Theory, operation, and repair of large gasoline and diesel powered vehicles, including engines, transmissions, and ignition; electrical components, shop equipment, air conditioning, heating, pneumatics, hydraulics and other related vehicle and facilities items;
  • Operating principles of analog and digital electronics, electronic control circuitry, and associated mechanical systems;
  • Theory, operation, and repair of electrically-powered rail vehicles;
  • Equipment and tools used in the maintenance and repair of transit vehicles and facilities;
  • Principles of quality assurance, including preventative maintenance;
  • Operation of common office equipment, including personal computers and common software applications.
Ability to:
  • Supervise, train, counsel and discipline subordinate personnel;
  • Plan and schedule the work of a maintenance shop for optimum production;
  • Inspect quality of work;
  • Meet established productivity standards and deadlines;
  • Estimate parts and shop needs and supply requirements;
  • Understand, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, union contract provisions and VTA policies and procedures;
  • Read and understand blueprints and schematics;
  • Prepare written reports, document defects and repairs on inspection forms, work orders, or designated computer programs;
  • Perform computer related functions that allow for data input and retrieval;
  • Follow oral and written instructions;
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
