Position Title: Civil Engineering Lab Manager
Position Type: Regular
Salary Range:
$24.16-$27.78, commensurate with experience
Pay Frequency: Hourly
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.Set-up and conduct laboratory experiments as required for civil engineering courses.
Knowledge of relevant test methods, procedures, equipment operation, data acquisition (analog, digital).
Assist with fabrication, setup, and teardown of test apparatus.
Assist with use of instruments, and data acquisition that support experimentation.
Monitor and maintain adequate inventory of testing expendables.
Provide assistance in the technical aspects of field trips several times a year.
2.Assist faculty with the implementation of experimental research.
Assist faculty with design, fabrication, and assembly of test setups.
Assist faculty with use of laboratory systems (programming and system control).
3.Maintain test systems and instrumentation used in instruction and research.
Provide regular checks of test systems and instrumentation to evaluate and verify expected performance.
Develop a plan for instrument maintenance and calibration, and a system for tracking the working order of equipment. Develop and maintain a system for getting equipment fixed or replaced when necessary.
Provide in-house maintenance and calibration between external calibrations.
Work with external vendors as necessary to ensure effective and continuous use of laboratory equipment.
Maintain calibration records and documentation of instrumentation and equipment.
Develop and maintain instructions on best practices in the operation of test equipment used in the laboratories.
Identify and recommend new laboratory test systems and purchase.
4.Use fork trucks, hoists, and rigging for moving supplies and heavy items.
Experience with the movement of heavy and/or sensitive equipment and test specimens using a variety of methods including pallet jacks, fork truck, chain hoists, spreader beams, slings, shackles, etc.
5.Ensure laboratories operate in a safe and effective manner.
Develop and maintain effective communication and relations with and between supervisors, faculty, staff, and students.
Effectively and regularly communicate laboratory use policies and expectations to meet the laboratory users' needs.
Manage laboratory access, space usage, and storage to provide for a safe, organized, and effective laboratory environment.
Provide training in the safe operation of tools and equipment to students and teaching assistants. Maintain records related to safety training.
Ensure that instrumentation, tools, and equipment are properly stored when not in use, and non-functional or damaged equipment is reported to the supervisor and department.
Ensure compliance with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) regulations and safety policies, including handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous and/or heavy materials, and hot work inspection and permitting.
Serve as liaison with EHS, conduct regular safety inspections, and take appropriate corrective action.
Be familiar with emergency response procedures and inform users of protocol.
Communicate information that impact laboratory usage to users (e.g., power outages, damaged equipment).
Attend relevant training courses and obtain relevant licenses and certifications (for example, operation of fork trucks, supervision of hot work, lifting, and rigging) consistent with EHS policies
Other duties as applicable for the effective functioning of department laboratories.
Recommend initiatives and implement approved changes to improve laboratory function.
Prepare progress and status reports as applicable.
Prepare and submit reports as requested.
When needed, develop and implement guidelines to support the functions of the laboratory.
C. WORK SUPERVISION
Supervise laboratory student assistants as needed.
D. QUALIFICATIONS
The successful applicant must have a demonstrated ability to excel in the performance of each essential duty. The items below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, education, and experience required or preferred.
1. Knowledge
Knowledge of principles of operation of civil engineering laboratory equipment and instrumentation; knowledge of basic electronics, and data acquisition and control (including programming); some degree of understanding of geotech labs that run multiple days. Experience with data acquisition and control software, such as Dewesoft, LabVIEW, DAYSlab, or Digital Signal Processing, is preferred.
Knowledge of safety principles and protocols; ability to learn applicable Environmental Health and Safety regulations.
Knowledge of safe handling of heavy materials, such as operation of fork trucks and overhead hoists.
2. Skills
Organized and timely communication.
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
Willingness and enthusiasm for learning in a dynamic environment.
3. Abilities
Ability to work independently, multi-task, initiate and prioritize work, and exercise sound judgment.
Ability to supervise diverse laboratory users and student employees, and ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.
Ability to use tools and shop equipment in the performance of essential duties.
Ability use tools to lift bags of cement (approximately 94 pounds) or other materials on an infrequent basis, including placement on shelves and pallets.
Ability to work on ladders and scaffolding.
4. Education
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of experience and/or education required.
5. Years of Experience
0 to 3 years required.

Laboratory environments that have OSHA/EHS approved exposures to dust, dirt, laboratory chemicals, and other materials.
