Salary will be between $78,536 - 83,342 and is based on the number of courses taught (8) and years of teaching experience; benefits eligible.
Purpose:
PURPOSE
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for an Academic Year Adjunct Lecturer (non-tenure-track) in Spanish beginning September 1st, 2023, to teach language and culture courses, primarily at the elementary and intermediate levels. Area of expertise open, though the candidate must meet the basic qualifications.
Specific assignments will be made according to the academic qualifications of the individual and programmatic need. The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of 8 courses over the year, with at least one course in each quarter, fall, winter, and spring. Each quarter is 10 weeks long, with an 11th week set for final examinations. This is a full-time, in-person position, as defined by the SCU Provost's Office policies. This position is for in-person instruction, however, the successful applicant may have to provide temporary online instruction should the county health or university health situation so require it.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D or ABD in Spanish (Linguistics with a Spanish emphasis, or a closely-related field preferred). Alternatively, Master's level applicants with at least 2 years of experience as instructor of record at the college level.
Native- or near-native level fluency in Spanish and English.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching Spanish language and culture at the college level.
Training in proficiency-based, communicatively-oriented, second language pedagogy.
Excellent communication skills in Spanish and English.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Expertise with communicatively-oriented, proficiency-based language instruction, ACTFL World Readiness Standards.
Familiarity with instructional technologies, Canvas web-based environment, Google Suite, Workday Student.
Experience or demonstrated interest in teaching Spanish for health professions.
Experience or demonstrated interest in second language pedagogy.
Potential for teaching literature and culture at the upper-division level.
Experience with inclusive pedagogical practices that advance SCU goals of diversity and equity.
Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching (95%) & Service (5%)
Teaching (95%):
Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with assigned courses, including:
Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.
Assigning and evaluating assignments that align with the course description and course learning outcomes, and providing timely feedback to students; measuring student learning outcomes within the context of departmental and Core objectives and the ACTFL World Readiness Standards.
Conducting student placement interviews.
Holding regular weekly office hours on campus;
Submitting student grades that are an appropriate, accurate and fair measure of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.
Administering numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses.
Teaching from an approved syllabus for the University Core courses assigned or work with the Chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.
Serve as an advisor to assigned students providing informed advice;
Develop courses for which they are responsible and contribute to general curriculum development.
Work in conjunction with language coordinator on course development, pedagogy and assessment.
Service (5%):
Faculty Handbook section 3.6.3.3 "Specific Functions Related to Service" defines service as "fostering and advancing the mission and goals of the department, the University, or the profession through contributions other than teaching and scholarship or creative work such as service on committees, participation in professional organizations and activities, and community service performed in virtue of their professional expertise or association with the University."
Service may more specifically include attending department meetings, serving on committees, advising student organizations and honor societies, taking part in student recruitment/orientation efforts, and contributing to the accreditation or program assessment. To respect the time and commitment of AYAL faculty members, service expectations must be commensurate with the full-time equivalency of the appointment.
Service is typically evaluated as 5% of the appointment. Additional service must be included through an assignment letter as part of the faculty member's formal written appointment.
Other minimal instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or the Chair of the Department.
