Qualifications


Position Summary

The phlebotomist provides prescribed medical treatment and personal care service to ill, injured, convalescent, and disabled persons under direction of a physician or nurse in Medical Centers.

Essential Job Functions

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  1. Assist with daily patient flow in areas as needed.
  2. Gives direct patient care and performs indirect patient care activities and laboratory test, under the direction of a physician or nurse.
  3. Takes appropriate action to maintain a safe and aesthetic environment.
  4. Performs EKG and maintain log.
  5. Transports patient to another department by means of wheelchair or stretcher,
  6. Performs lab work as per physician orders and prepares instrumental equipment for sterilization.
  7. Communicates observations of patients status to nurse-in-charge.
  8. Responsible for ordering medical supplies according to the department needs.
  9. Able to rotate weekends, holidays, and shifts and center location according to company needs.
  10. Adheres to Nursing Department policies and procedures.
  11. Participates in meetings of staff and department meetings.
  12. Shares acquired knowledge and learning.
  13. Checks equipment and supplies prior to use for function, inspection, and expiration date; reports malfunction of medical equipment and safety issues to supervisor.
  14. Maintains quality control (i.e. Glucometer, eyewash, refrigerator temperature and autoclave) and cleaning logs as needed for the department.
  15. Complies with Infection Control and OSHA Regulations (biomedical wastes, handling, and disposal) for the center as per regulations.
  16. Obtain specimens in appropriate containers and labels correctly.
  17. Follows medical center guidelines for isolation techniques.
  18. Responds politely when addressed, assists in a helpful friendly manner.
  19. Consistently reports for duty on time.
  20. Keeps patients information private and limits conversation of a personal nature in patients presence.]
  21. Degree of teamwork and cooperation with personnel from other departments.
  22. Maintain logging system for different procedures as required and enter nursing procedures and other information in the computer system.
  23. Check medical records and follow up obtaining missing results prior to patients appointment.
  24. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to work standing up, walk, use hands to operate tools and equipment and must be able to exert regularly up to 10 pounds of force, frequently exert 30 pounds of force and occasionally exert 50 pounds of force to constantly perform the essential job functions. The employee will be frequently required to reach with hands and arms, bend, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, and pull. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The worker is subject to noise; there may be sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.

Required Education and Experience

  1. High School Graduate or equivalent
  2. Phlebotomy Certificate Required
  3. CPR preferred
  4. 1 year in a clinical setting, previous hospital experience and/or physician office experience
  5. Basic Computer Skills
  6. Customer Service skills and training
  7. Bilingual English/Spanish
  8. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  9. Possess the ability to ambulate, position and transfer patients.
  10. Demonstrates effective Communication skills with staff members, specific population served and others.
  11. Possesses the ability to interpret, adapt and react calmly under stressful conditions.
  12. Demonstrates basic care skills.
  13. Ability to organize work and follow instructions.
  14. Demonstrates a positive attitude in dealing effectively with people of all ages.
  15. Demonstrates knowledge as it relates to age specific consumer population.
  16. Must be able to maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  17. Must be able to follow policies and procedures and work flexible schedule and location.
  18. Ability to communicate and deal effectively with patients, co-workers, medical staff, visitors, and other health care providers.

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. Medical Assistant Certificate
  2. Relevant or any other job-related vocational coursework.
