About the Program and Position:

Our Transitional Foster Care Program for Unaccompanied Children (UC) overseen by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), ensures the well-being and safety of unaccompanied children (ages 0-17) who cross the US Southern border without an adult. Unlike traditional congregate care settings, our approach involves placing unaccompanied children in foster homes while diligently searching for and assessing potential sponsors identified in the US. During their stay with us, we provide medical care, case management, engaging life skills classes, and essential mental health services.

Our Phlebotomists are passionate about helping this vulnerable population and provide support for any medical needs required by the unaccompanied children we serve.

How you get to use your skills…

  • Preparing patients before drawing blood
  • Explaining blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process
  • Following all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas
  • Gathering medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags, and test tubes
  • Verifying patient information and labeling blood samples properly
  • Accurately updating patient information in the organization’s database
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality (HIPAA) at all times
  • Working with medical team, and following supervisor directions at all times

Schedule:

  • Non-Exempt
  • Regular hours entail Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm
  • Must be flexible to meet program needs
  • Weekend and evenings hours required


Experience and Skills:

  • High school diploma/GED required
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant, EMT, Phlebotomist, Paramedic, or LPN required
  • Experience working with at-risk youth - strongly preferred
  • Strong communication and organizational skills - required
  • Bi-lingual English-Spanish required.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team context
  • Demonstrated ability to perform duties with minimal supervision and to exercise greater judgment
  • Ability to travel to other agency locations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Word processing: Including responding to emails, composing letters, completing computerized documentation, be familiar with excel and electronic medical record system etc.: This involves sitting at a computer for several hours
  • Completing paperwork -Such as copying, scanning and faxing documents
