Survey Crew Chief - Sierra Vista 

General Summary: The Survey Crew Chief will plan and evaluate proposed field survey projects, manage the field survey teams, prepare, process and coordinate the required field design survey work and construction staking survey work and other surveys and daily survey logs as part of public and private commercial, residential and industrial development projects based on client’s intent/vision, budget, timeline, jurisdictional requirements and community needs and concerns. In addition, the Survey Crew Chief will lead the company's field survey team in the field.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Acts as crew chief for a field survey crew engaged in making plans and/or geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects; participates in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers, resident engineers, and contractor representatives; assigns and monitors work, and provides input for evaluation of members of the field survey crew; is the senior field surveyor in survey and mapping methods, use of equipment, and field safety procedures.
  2. Gathers field survey data through use of conventional and Global Positioning System (GPS) methods; sets up, adjusts, and operates surveying equipment, including electronic total station, data collector, and GPS equipment, in order to measure distances, elevations, and angles; prepares field notes and drawings; performs field surveying for roadway, bridges, and flood control projects, including installing surveying construction stakes, tying out existing intersection ties, and locating or establishing vertical and horizontal control, right of way, monuments, corners, boundaries, and property lines.
  3. Performs complex surveying calculations using engineering calculator, laptop computer, personal computer, and graphics software, such as AutoCAD; analyzes raw data for mathematical closure and geometric accuracy; provides survey information for Geographic Information System (GIS); and prepares finished grade sheets, topographic maps, records of survey, ALTA Surveys, corner staking, etc., and other survey reports.
  4. Research existing record information, including record maps, plans, deeds, easements, and right-of-way documents; and maintains field data records, survey project files, and indexing systems.
  5. Performs the duties of the Crew Chief and acts as Land Surveyor in supervisor’s absence; performs field surveys, including staking, boundary control, horizontal and vertical controls, hydrographic, topographic, and environmental surveys.
  6. Ensures the integration of field data and records into completed maps, plats, drawings and records.
  7. Assists in construction, design, topographic, hydrographic, property and all types of control surveys.
  8. Assumes responsibility for the company survey equipment and oversees equipment maintenance and inventory.
  9. Produces accurate detailed maps with accurate surveying data in a timely manner.
  10. Sets up, operates, and adjusts all types of survey equipment, including a level, transit and electronic measuring device.
  11. Makes trigonometric calculations, such as adjusting traverses and calculation of coordinates, control points, quantities, and areas.
  12. Prepares and reviews maps, drawings, sketches, plats and simple reports from field notes and makes recommendations.
  13. Trains other crew members on the latest technology in surveying equipment and finds new and innovative ways of doing surveys.
  14. May perform mapping compliance or other related office survey duties as a temporary assignment to satisfy the training/experience requirement for the Professional Land Surveyor's License.

Other Responsibilities

  1. Ability to: assign, prioritize, schedule, and delegate work; explain technical concepts to others; provide constructive feedback; direct, train, and evaluate the performance of staff; enforce safety practices; work independently; read and interpret engineering plans; collect, calculate, and adjust mathematical computations such as distances, traverses, and elevations; analyze data; operate and maintain complex precision surveying instruments, engineering calculators, and personal computers; perform difficult algebraic, geometric, trigonometric, and precise engineering calculations; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with County staff, engineers, developers, contractors, and the general public.
  2. Provide general, complex, detailed, and technical information to a variety of clients and sub consultants, including the general client, team, public, professional, and technical co- workers, developers, and elected officials.
  3. Communicate directly and effectively with customers under demanding conditions that include high work volume, firm deadlines, confrontational situations, disputed interpretations, and complex explanations to individuals with diverse levels of technical expertise. Develop, prepare, and present plans, reports, supporting documentation, and presentations.
  4. Read, understand, interpret, and analyze complex regulations, standards and a wide variety of information related to planning and environmental issues available in a wide variety of formats.
  5. Analyze a variety of information or issues and effectively use independent judgment in interpretation of information, decision making, problem resolution, and compliance requirements.
  6. Conduct field visits and inspections at construction sites and a wide variety of outdoor locations by safely navigating all types of terrain, potentially hazardous sites, and in all weather conditions.
  7. Travel to and participate in a variety of meetings, public hearings, conferences, seminars and related activities throughout local and regional area that may occur on evenings or weekends.

Equipment and Supply Coordination

  1. Maintain: survey equipment, vehicles, batteries, and consumables inventory in storage and in a vehicle.

LANGUAGE SKILLS-Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Must possess the ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS-Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as algebra, trigonometry, plane and solid geometry. Also the ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY-Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Education or Formal Training:

  1. 2 Year degree in Survey / Engineering or 15 years of field experience on public and private Construction Staking Projects.
  2. RPLS or LSIT preferred
  3. 10 years of survey experience required. Equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered.

 Environmental Factors:

Work is regularly performed for sustained periods outdoors and occasionally in hot, cold, or inclement weather.

Frequently lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects weighing up to 40 lbs. Use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. Carry equipment up and down steep terrain. Walk, stand, crouch, or run on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. May regularly drive a field truck and occasionally operate a rugged off terrain vehicle.

Must possess a current, valid Arizona State driver’s license at time of appointment and maintained always thereafter to operate a vehicle on company business.
