San Francisco Community Health Center is Hiring a Street Medicine Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist Near San Francisco, CA

The Street Medicine Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist works in collaboration with the multidisciplinary Street Medicine Team. The team provides whole person care to unhoused people where they are. This may be in tents or encampments, at SROs or at a 4-walled clinic. The MA will need to be able to take vitals, draw blood, give injections and fulfill the other job duties in all these settings when possible. This position requires a high level of teamwork and flexibility but offers opportunities to learn new skills and participate in program development. 

Essential Duties:

  • Provide patients with a high level of clinical service, from visit preparation, visit assistance, and follow-up activities.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to the Clinic Policies and Procedures relevant to their tasks.
  • Responsible for advising their supervisor of any change in status that would affect their ability to perform services.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all patients and their family.

  • Prepare patient huddle sheets, attend and participate in street med huddles.

  • Collect preliminary patient data, including taking a patient history as well as completing the appropriate screening questionnaires.

  • Responsible for:prepping patients for medical care, venipuncture, immunizations, hormone injections, placement of PPD,point of care testing, performing ECGs,taking vital signs; including weight, blood pressure, temperature, respiration rate, oxygen saturation and pulse.

  • Process and aliquot blood and urine specimens.

  • Make appointments, assistproviders during procedures, patient education and enter patient information into the medical electronic records.

  • Accurate and timely documentation in electronic medical record of all procedures performed in clinic or on street medicine rounds.

  • Assist in sending, scheduling and following up on referrals and specialty care.

  • Participate in Quality Improvement activities.

  • Responsible for stocking medical bags and prepping supplies for street-based care.

  • Assist in assigned projects as assigned by the Supervisor.

  • Ensure the teams compliance with applicable health care quality requirements.

  • Responsibilities as described in the Administrative Policies Procedures for San Francisco Community Health Center.

  • Be comfortable working with people actively using substances.

  • Maintain competency as listed in MA Training and Competency Checklist, and in accordance with applicable state regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience as a medical assistant in a medical practice or clinic and/or certified in California as a Medical Assistant.
  • Experience performing phlebotomy and medication injections.
  • Highly organized and task-oriented with attention to detail.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Sensitivity to issues affecting LGBTIQQ and communities of color (e.g., Asians, Pacific Islanders, Latinos/Latinas, African Americans, Native Americans) as well as unhoused individuals.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to think analytically and creatively to solve problems.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook.
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and able to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in working with people experiencing homelessness, substance use and LBGTIQQ populations.
  • A second language other than English.
  • Ability to work evenings.
