Job Summary
The SDCOE is recruiting for Teacher Assistants (TA) for the Special Education programs. TA's will work closely with a Special Education teacher in assigned classrooms to provide tutorial assistance.

The Juvenile Court & Community Schools Program serves home-schooled students, teen parents, incarcerated youth, youth on probation, working teens who need to help support themselves or their families, homeless youth, expelled youth, youth in group homes, and other youth who benefit from a non-traditional learning environment.

TEACHER ASSISTANT
Juvenile Court and Community Schools

DEFINITION

Under the immediate supervision of a classroom teacher or school administrator, provides clerical and tutorial assistance to the instructional program in an assigned classroom at a Juvenile Court and Community Schools program.

TYPICAL TASKS
•Orients and provides instructional assistance to individuals or small groups of students.
•Tutors individuals and small groups of students in various subject areas.
•Observes and controls behavior of students according to approved procedures; reports progress regarding student performance and behavior.
•Administers tests to students and posts test results; scores papers and posts scores to student records.
•Assists teacher in establishing and maintaining a clean, safe and pleasant classroom and learning environment.
•Assists in preparing instructional materials.
•Delivers teaching materials and supplies to classrooms.•Assembles, sets up and installs new equipment.
•Sets up bulletin board and other classroom displays.
•Assists in maintaining student records and files; takes attendance.
•Operates equipment such as copy machines, computers and audiovisual equipment.
•Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Graduation from high school or its equivalent.
Two years or 48 semester units of study in a college/university; or Associates degree or higher; or successful completion of an assessment test, administered by the San Diego County Office of Education, in basic reading, writing, mathematics skills and the ability to assist with instruction is required as stated in the No Child Left Behind Act.

Concurrent enrollment in a minimum of six (6) semester units or nine (9) quarter hours of college credit at an institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Verification of Enrollment (Form TA140) must be submitted prior to start of employment and submitted each year.

Experience
Some experience working with students is desirable.
Requirements / Qualifications
THIS POSTING IS FOR SUBSTITUTE AND/OR LIMITED-TERM POSITIONS.
This position is not eligible for benefits.
All Teacher Assistants must be currently enrolled in school and carrying at least six-semester units or the equivalent, regardless of how much education has already been completed. SDCOE will verify the enrollment of each TA selected for hire through a form that must be completed by your college or university registrar.
Applicants with bilingual skills in Spanish and Arabic are preferred.
Candidates must demonstrate Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA, previously referred to as the NCLB Act) compliance. In order to satisfy the paraprofessional requirements of the ESSA, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; AND,
  • Completed at least 48-semester units at an accredited college or university; OR ,
  • Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree; OR ,
  • Successful completion of an assessment, administered by the San Diego County Office of Education, in basic reading, writing, mathematics skills, and the ability to assist with instruction. The assessment is administered only to candidates selected to move forward in the pre-employment process.

It is important to note to become a substitute/limited-term employee, there will be a fingerprinting requirement that currently costs $77 (this is an up-front, out-of-pocket cost that must be paid in the form of a money order or cashier's check). In addition, if you apply and are selected for a permanent position at any point there would be an additional $77 cost (currently) for fingerprinting as a permanent employee (taken out of your first regular paycheck).
