Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is Hiring a Paraprofessional (Tutor) Near Scottsdale, AZ

This is a 10 month position.

Under general supervision from the Principal, the Paraprofessional performs duties to support and assist the assigned Classroom Teacher or instructional program. Specific work instructions will be provided by the Teacher or assigned by the Principal.

Primary Job Functions: may include the following tasks, knowledge’s, abilities, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions within this classification

Instructional & Classroom 

  • Provides direct instructional support to individuals and/or groups of students. May involve individual tutoring, small group instruction in reading and math, may require supervision in the special area classes (if assigned to ESS).
  • Implements academic instruction for individuals or small groups (e.g. math, reading, spelling, etc.) 
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials for the purpose of providing an opportunity for all students to participate in classroom activities or meeting the IEP requirements.
  • Provides personal care, medical care, and/or feeding of students as stated in IEP. 
  • Supervises the classroom in the absence of the Teacher.
  • Serves as Substitute Teacher when needed.

Behavior 

  • Assists staff in the management of student behavior by applying proactive strategies when dealing with student behaviors. 
  • Models appropriate pro-social skills, participation, adult behaviors and problem-solving skills.
  • Reinforces academic behaviors taught by certificated staff and provides the student with opportunities to practice.
  • Performs duties in a manner that inspires and motivates students to excel, and is respectful of students, parents, co-workers and Administrators.
  • Enforces Education Board policies by correcting student behavior and testifying at hearings
  • Monitors and assists students in the classroom/lab, library, school settings, playground activities, community outings, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safety of assigned students.

Communication 

  • Confers with teachers for the purpose of providing information related to the student’s progress
  • Confers with teachers, parents, counselors and/or participates in team meetings for the purpose of assisting in the student intervention process if assigned to work with ESS students.
  • Confers with teachers, parents, counselors and/or participates in team meetings for the purpose of assisting in evaluating student progress regarding IEP goals/objectives.
  • Provides verbal and/or written feedback of observations for the purpose of assisting certificated personnel in evaluating students.

Records 

  • Collects data regarding student(s) reaching goals/objectives.
  • Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records (e.g. adapting instructional materials, checking papers, attendance, set up adapted projects, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing reliable information.

Professional Development

  • Maintains professional Community Schools School Paraprofessional competencies by attending mandatory in-service training and workshops and self-selected professional growth activities as related to the job. 

General Duties

  • Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, fights, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or referring to appropriate party for resolution.
  • Act as a cooperative team member in working with staff, community and families of students.
  • Follows the school’s process for documenting student inappropriate behavior, immediately.
  • Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. in-school after school detention, restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students.
  • Follows the school’s process for documenting student inappropriate behavior, immediately.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities in accordance with the SRPMIC Education Board Policies and Procedures.
  • May transport students to school and job sites as needed using tribal vehicles.

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Knowledge of:

  • Microsoft Office Suite, the Internet, and other related software applications
  • The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and Culture

Skilled in:

  • Understanding competencies including: basic needs, learning styles, and behavior of students with emotional disabilities; instructional procedures and practices; age appropriate student activities; safety practices and procedures; conflict resolution; and basic child development theory and principles.

Education and Experience: Requires a minimum of an Associate’s Degree; or completion of two (2) years of general studies at an accredited institution of higher education (60 hrs ); or a passing score on a paraprofessional exam that is approved by the Arizona Department of Education.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with classroom experience; or 
  • Experience working with Native American children.

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.

Driving Requirement: This job description does not require the incumbent to drive; however, any employee who chooses or is asked to drive any vehicle for work related community business must receive written annual authorization to do so. For clarification, work related community business includes driving to and from SRPMIC government sites and buildings.

Terms of Employment:This position is treated as a full-time non-exempt position scheduled for 40 hours per week.

Must be able to pass a Pre-Employment Drug Test and extensive Fingerprint and Background Check. Employee is Subject to Random Drug Testing and completion of a Background Check every five (5) years.
