Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is Hiring a Certified Nurse Midwife Near Scottsdale, AZ

Definition: Under indirect supervision from the Chief Medical Officer, the Certified Nurse Midwife independently manages women's health care, focusing particularly on pregnancy, the post-partum period, care of the newborn, and the family planning and gynecologic needs of women. Practice within the health care system and perform consultation, collaborative management, or referral, as indicated by the health status of the client. Practice in accord with the Standards for the Practice of Midwifery, as defined by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Essential Functions: Essential functions may vary among position and may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.

Tasks:
  • Clinical Services:
  • Provides independent care to low-risk women and babies and in addition may participate in the care of patients with high risk problems. High Risk cases involve complications such as diabetes, pre-eclampsia, hypertension, and anemia, which will involve consultations, collaboration and referral with an OB/GYN.
  • Performs complete history and physical examination.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory studies
  • Orders, administers and monitors medications with prescriptive authorization.
  • Utilizes electronic health record to document all patient care.
  • Determines the need for ultrasound exams; ante partum testing, and uses the results to plan and carry out the course of treatment.
  • Manages the medical nursing care of patients during their postpartum period, provides family planning education/services and gynecological services to women. Prescribes birth control pills, inserts contraceptive devices, does pelvic examinations and Pap smears.
  • Evaluates and determines the need for consultation and obtains physician consultations as needed. Implements consultant management plan.
  • Determines the need for referral to other agencies and health care providers and makes referrals.
  • Determines the need to involve health care providers, obtains consultations and works cooperatively with them.
  • Provides advice and services as a health consultant to patients, other professionals, the community and others as requested.
  • Maintains health records utilizing problems oriented format.
  • Provides for comprehensive (total) care with the freedom to consult with and/or refer to other health care providers as necessary.
 
Education tasks:
  • Collaborates in planning and participates in teaching education programs for patients, families, para-professional and professional health workers.
  • Teaches and informs patients and family members to promote informed consent and knowledgeable participation in their own care and ways to maintain and/or improve their health status. This includes nutritional counseling, potential complications from birth control pills, I.U.D's etc.
 
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs, and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of midwifery theory, procedure and standards.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate individual patient care programs.
  • Ability to perform patient assessment and triage
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
  • Knowledge of gynecological health issues and trends.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments
Qualifications:
  • Education and Experience •Master's degree in nursing or related degree for graduates after 2000; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities, which may include practicum.
  • A valid license that meets the Arizona State Board of Nursing's requirement to practice as a certified nurse midwife as well as registered with the American College of Nurse Midwives. Participation in the Certificate Maintenance Program with the American Midwifery Certification Board.
  • Prescription and dispensing privileges certified by the Arizona State Board of Nursing,
  • Registered as an independent DEA member required.
  • CPR and Neonatal CPR certified or achieved within probationary period.
  • Subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status. Must maintain current certification and/or licensure appropriate to Certified Nurse Midwife including American Midwifery Certification Board and complete required related continuing education credits as required by the American Midwifery Certification Board.
 

Equivalency:Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.

Underfill Eligibility:An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

 
  • Maybe required to work outside of regular clinic hours.
  • Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of this position, successful completion of an extensive background investigation is required.
