JOB SUMMARY

The job of Head Custodian – Elementary is performed to maintain an attractive, sanitary, healthy, and safe facility for students, staff and public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure; ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner; and overseeing and supporting assigned custodians in the performance of their assignments.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Two years of custodial experience.
  3. Valid Utah driver’s license and evidence of insurability.
  4. Speak, read, write, present professionally, analyze, understand, and interpret written and verbal communications in English.
  5. Basic experience and proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.).
  6. Experience following safety practices and procedures and utilizing industrial cleaning methods such as “Team Cleaning,” “I.P.M.,” and green cleaning concepts.
  7. Ability to meet the significant physical demands of the position, which include frequently lifting up to 50 pounds along with frequent pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and significant fine finger dexterity.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

These are examples of skills and experience that the best qualified candidates may have. Not having one or all of them does not disqualify any candidate from consideration.

  1. Supervisory experience.
  2. Experience in a K-12 education or public employment environment.
  3. Preference will be given to candidates who currently serve as contract custodians.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Work under limited supervision to lead the custodial staff in cleaning the assigned school facilities (e.g., classrooms, office, gym, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, pools, grounds, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment while utilizing industrial cleaning methods, team cleaning, I.P.M. and green cleaning concepts and appropriate cleaning tools (e.g., Protexus electrostatic sprayers with Pathosans cleaner).
  2. Act as the IPM site coordinator; follow safety practices and procedures, IPM guidelines, and ensure that safety practices and guidelines are followed by site custodial personnel.
  3. Supervise custodial personnel at assigned facility (e.g., screening, interviewing, training, evaluating, disciplining, developing safety awareness, skill development, task distribution, task assignment, etc.) to maintain adequate staffing, enhance productivity, achieve objectives, and assure that department responsibilities and goals are achieved accurately, on time, and within budget.
  4. Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform the duties of the position.
  5. Communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and positive working relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and other district employees.
  6. Maintain supplies and equipment (e.g., cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.
  7. Monitor building mechanical and maintenance systems to identify problems and ensure systems are functioning properly.
  8. Inform site administrator, supervisor, and other personnel of custodial issues in the building (e.g., floor waxing, repairs to be made, etc.) to provide information regarding activities, safety, and proper maintenance of facilities.
  9. Adapt to changing work priorities, maintain confidentiality, set priorities, work as part of a team, work with frequent interruptions, and prioritize and meet deadlines.
  10. Attend required and in-service training (e.g., blood borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.) to receive information on updated processes, maintain knowledge, and comply with regulatory and district requirements.
  11. Coordinate furniture set up and other site activities (e.g., snow removal, periodic deep cleaning, window cleaning, etc.) to ensure clean facilities and availability of equipment.
  12. Inspect school facilities to identify necessary repairs (due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.) to ensure that the site is suitable for safe operations and is maintained in an attractive and clean condition.
  13. Attend and participates in meetings as assigned to convey or receive information.
  14. Prepare documentation (e.g., work schedules, supervisory notes, work orders, etc.) to provide written support or convey information.
  15. Prepare facility for daily operations (e.g., opening gates, building access doors, disarming security systems, raising flags, crosswalk signs, minor repairs, etc.) to ensure facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.
  16. Repair furniture and equipment and ensure that needed items are available and in a safe working condition.
  17. Replenish materials (e.g., paper towels, cloth towel rolls, toilet paper, hand soap, etc.) ensuring adequate stock for daily use.
  18. Respond to immediate safety and operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) and takes appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintain a functioning educational environment.
  19. Secure facilities and grounds to minimize property damage, equipment loss, and potential liability.
  20. Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  21. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking and 45% standing. This job is performed under some temperature variations with some outdoor work and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and illness.
