Maintenance Technician

About the Position

The Maintenance Technician performs a variety of advanced technical and skilled duties as needed to install, maintain and repair various buildings, equipment and facility components. The Maintenance Technician will identify and respond to maintenance needs and potential problems.

Primary Responsibilities

• Working relationships. Fosters good working relationships with diverse people including staff, patrons, volunteers and vendors.Accepts assignments from supervisor, manager or other Library staff in a professional and timely manner.
• Preventative maintenance. Performs preventative maintenance on buildings, heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, hot water systems, pumps, and electrical systems. Assists with preventative maintenance development.
• Breakdown and general maintenance. Performs breakdown and general maintenance on various types of equipment and systems.
• Plumbing. Removes blockages to restroom/kitchen facilities to restore the flow and drainage of wastewater.
• Building maintenance. Repairs drywall, floors, ceilings, tile setting, painting, caulking, etc. Performs general facility maintenance.
• Work orders. Determines materials needed to complete assigned work orders. Purchases materials and supplies needed.
• Seasonal duties. Performs various seasonal duties, such as, snow removal, winterization, sprinkler system maintenance and sprinkler head installation and repair.
• Grounds. Maintains building grounds. Including; gardening, weed prevention, planting, pruning, graffiti removal, etc. Cleans and maintains reflection pond.
• Vendor management. Monitors contract performance. Works with vendors to resolve any issues.
• Emergency Response. Will be placed on an emergency call list. May be required to respond to 24-hour emergencies and perform emergency building or equipment repair.
• Ensure safe vehicle operation. Keeps the vehicle clean inside and out. Drives vehicle in a safe manner at all times, always wearing a seat belt, and obeying all traffic rules.
• Vehicle maintenance. Monitors preventative maintenance schedule. Notifies the Facilities Manager of any vehicle maintenance needs.
• Other duties. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school graduation or equivalent and three years experience performing general building maintenance or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid Utah driver license and a clean driving record.
• Must be available to work occasional days and/or weekends and before or after Library hours.
• Experience in working with vendors or other suppliers on large jobs.
• General knowledge of building maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, facility repair.
• Knowledge of regulations governed by state and federal building codes, health codes, safety codes, fire codes, ADA, OSHA, etc.; and safety procedures and regulations.Working knowledge of computerized mechanical systems.
• Ability to perform routine record keeping functions; exercise initiative and independent judgment and to react resourcefully under varying conditions; plan and schedule work priorities effectively; read and interpret building plans and specifications; communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, vendors, contractors and the public.
• Ability to move objects weighing up to 90 lbs. climb ladders, stand/walk for extended periods, bend over, kneel, perform functions that may require being on the ground.
• Ability to work in adverse conditions such as tight or enclosed spaces, heights, and temperature extremes.

Preferred Qualifications

• Spanish language and/or other non-English language skills.

Working Environment

• Work is performed in an Urban library environment.
• Subject to repetitive movement; standing, walking, bending, reaching and lifting of objects.
• Must be able to lift/carry up to 90 lbs, and push/pull up to 300 lbs. climb ladders, stand/walk for extended periods, bend over, kneel, perform functions that may require being on the ground.
• Must have good hand mobility and coordination.
• Subject to intermittent periods of inclement weather when working outside.

Schedule

• Full-time, 40 hours per week. May be required to work mornings, and weekends. May require being on-call.

Compensation

• Starting Range Grade 16; Minimum $23.13/hour. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
• This is a full time position and includes excellent benefits such as paid vacation, health and life insurance, and Utah State retirement benefits.
