Salado Isolation Mining Contractors is Hiring a Central Characterization Program (CCP) Visual Examination Engineer Near Carlsbad, NM

Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste.

Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Central Characterization Program (CCP) Visual Examination Cognizant Engineer and join our team to support our government customer in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

The successful candidate will:

  • Demonstrate the understanding of the visual examination requirements as to be the appointed the CCP Visual Examination Cognizant Engineer.
  • Interface with working groups and customers from outside organizations as needed to complete work scope.
  • Responsible for promoting safe and compliant Visual Examination operations at all Host Sites.
  • Provide direction, mentoring and continued development to qualified Visual Examination Experts, Visual Examination Operators and trainees.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the WIPP Hazardous Waste Facility Permit (HWFP) Attachment C - Waste Analysis Plan (WAP), Transuranic Waste Authorized Methods for Payload Control (TRAMPAC) and the WIPP Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC).
  • Assist in the staging and logistics of CCP equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The standard work schedule for this position is Monday through Thursday; 10-hour days.

Exempt Salary Grade (30-33)

Minimum Requirements: These requirements must be met to be considered for this posting. Uploaded resumes and completed applications are the means of determination.

  • Bachelor’s degree with (2) years, or
  • Associate’s degree with six (6) years of relevant experience, or
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency with ten (10) years of relevant experience is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of operational safety, conduct of operations, and quality assurance programs.
  • Previous experience with nuclear and/or hazardous waste/materials.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a “Q” Clearance.
  • Ability to manage light to moderate domestic travel.

Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Basic skill in researching, and recommending alternative solutions to problems associated with the management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control and/or transportation of TRU Waste
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication and the ability to interact with a variety of constituents.
  • Previous or current CCP Vendor Project Manager qualification.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of CCP TRU Waste Characterization activities and processes.
  • Previous experience with forklifts/heavy equipment.
  • One (1) year in a supervisory role is preferred.

Starting salary $78,719 per year *

*Base salary will be dependent upon candidate's background (i.e. education and experience)
