The Academic Advisor for the Nursing Department advises a diverse population in regards to their academic planning and progress through the Nursing program by utilizing professional advising and guidance skills. Responsible for working directly with students in interpreting and explaining university academic policies and procedures in an effort to help individuals select, outline, and achieve educational and developmental goals. In addition, the Academic Advisor collaborates with the Director of Nursing to strengthen advising, implement intervention strategies, and create relevant programming.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions & Responsibilities - Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. • Advise, mentor, and guide undergraduate nursing students.
• Participate in new student orientation, and advising and registration days. Work collaboratively with various campus programs and personnel to promote student academic success.
• Assist with the Early Alert Program and assist students, as appropriate, in developing individualized academic improvement plans; help students plan a course of study and navigate administrative structures.
• Work closely with members of the Advising Center team and nursing faculty leaders to develop advising best practices and procedures for students; assist with creating advising related materials and resources.
• Provide mid-term and semester reports on advisees, as appropriate, to the Director of Nursing and the Dean of Library & Student Success; generate end-of-semester reports; participate in annual assessment processes.
• Represent the Center for Student Success at campus visits, new student orientation programs, and on campus committees.
• Attend to professional growth as a key member within the Center for Student Success and sustain an unwavering commitment to empowering SMU students for academic success; undertake other duties as assigned.

• Experience in academic advising and student success programs;
• Knowledge of successful intervention procedures, and advising/consulting techniques for students who are exploratory or who are experiencing academic difficulties;
• Experience working directly with a diverse population of undergraduate students; deep interest in supporting the development of undergraduate students as they transition into university life;
• Knowledge of or experience with a variety of effective interventions to assist students in developing effective learning strategies for academic success at the university level;
• Ability to work individually with students to develop an academic plan for their time at SMU and beyond;
• Knowledge of campus-wide student support resources and ability to make effective referrals;
• Educational training or experience in program assessment;
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals regardless of their status (e.g., faculty, staff, students), including those who are experiencing a stressful situation;
• Ability to organize and prioritize tasks while upholding high customer service standards;
• Proficiency in Microsoft applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience working with Student Information Systems (e.g., Power Campus, Banner)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment. Physical demands include:
• Moves objects (less than 20 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet).
• Ability to be mobile campus wide for appropriate business needs.
• Operates a variety of standard office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements.
• Reading, writing, speaking, hearing, standing, bending, sitting.
• Learning and comprehending.
• Requires visual concentration on detail.
• Manual dexterity and precision required for keyboarding
• Must be able to sit for long periods at a time at a computer
• May occasionally be required to deal with distraught people.
• Must be able to concentrate on details and process complex information while experiencing frequent interruptions.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with people at all levels under stressful conditions.
REQUIREMENTS AND/OR CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
• Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years advising experience OR Master’s degree and one (1) year of advising or related experience in higher education.
• Successfully pass a criminal background check.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
