GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:

In collaboration with physicians, provides high-level independent genetic counseling. Clinically assess and counsel individuals and families regarding genetics and risk management. Provides education to patients and families as well as to physicians and the community.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) required, or obtained within 12 months from hire date.

American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification required within 12 months of hire.

Minimum of one-year experience in Genetic Counseling preferred. State of Idaho provisional/regular license required, or obtained within 12 months of hire.

The ideal candidate will have experience or passion in prenatal genetics counseling.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Organization's Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions. Demonstrate knowledge and skills to competently care for expectant mothers and families. Ensure the accuracy of documenting services and supplies provided to the patients. Works in collaboration with OB GYN and Maternal Fetal Programs and with referring physicians to ensure provision of appropriate care.

Obtains and evaluates the family histories of the patient and patient’s family members to provide genetic evaluation. Discusses with the patient and the family the features, natural history, means of diagnosis, genetic and environmental factors, and management of risk for pre-disposition syndromes or genetic conditions. Identifies, coordinates, and obtains informed consent for genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies as appropriate for genetic assessment.

Integrates the results of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests with individual and family medical histories. Explains to a patient and the patient’s family the clinical implications of the results of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests. Provides risk analysis and calculation.

Provides post-test counseling and support, including review of medical management options.

Provides accurate, appropriate and timely reports for patient records and to referring physicians. Identifies and uses community resources that provide medical, educational, financial, psychosocial support and advocacy. Provides genetics education to other health care professionals. Attends applicable meetings and conferences.
